AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone has been on Arsenal's radar. However, Manchester United and Inter Milan are also interested in the player.
L'Equipe has reported (translated from French), "the French midfielder is attracting interest from England. Manchester United is among the clubs most interested."
Kone would have been a perfect fit for Arsenal, given his versatility in playing centrally, as well as in defensive and attacking roles. He helped Roma finish third in Serie A last season, and then went on to represent France at the World Cup.
The Gunners are already interested in bringing Bruno Guimaraes to the club, but it remains to be seen if Newcastle United will let him go. Mikel Arteta's side were also priced out of Morgan Rogers, who is now set to join Chelsea for £117 million.
3 Manu Kone alternatives for Arsenal to consider
Ayyoub Bouaddi
Ayyoubb Bouaddi is one of the most sought-after midfielders in the world right now. Arsenal would face competition for his services from all the top European clubs, including Manchester City and Real Madrid.
Bouaddi is only 18, so Arsenal could offer first-team opportunities that could be hard to come by at City or Los Blancos. Bouaddi is a defensive-minded central midfielder, so he could be perfect for Arsenal, especially if they are unable to sign Guimaraes.
City already has the best defensive midfielder in the world in Rodri, whilst Real Madrid have Aurélien Tchouameni. Bouaddi could be the perfect player to compete with Martin Zubimendi for a starting spot at Arsenal.
Zubimendi had a very good season for Arsenal as they won the Premier League. It would have been harsh to bring in Guimaraes to replace him. Signing Bouaddi as an understudy to the 27-year-old Spaniard could be perfect.
Adam Wharton
Adam Wharton may have missed out on going to the World Cup with England. However, he can use this as motivation to become an even better player. If Wharton were at Arsenal, then he would stand a better chance of making Thomas Tuchel's squad.
Wharton is only 22 and fits the profile of the player Arsenal are looking for. He can play in attacking central and defensive midfield roles. Manchester United are also interested in him, but if they go for Kone instead, it could pave the way for Wharton to join the Gunners.
Arsenal have done well out of signing players from Palace in the past. Ian Wright and, more recently, Eberechi Eze arrived from Selhurst Park. Wharton won the FA Cup with Eze at Palace and has played alongside Declan Rice for England. Therefore, he should slot into Arsenal's midfield nicely.
Carlos Baleba
Carlos Baleba is another player who has been heavily linked with United. Galatasaray and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the Brighton & Hove Albion player. Baleba is only 22, and whilst he is predominantly a defensive-minded central midfielder, he can also play in attacking roles.
If United sign Kone, then Baleba could be an option for the Gunners. The Red Devils already have an abundance of midfielders after signing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos this summer. Surprisingly, they are going for Kone too.
Baleba is too talented a player to go to the Süper Lig right now. Therefore, he should rule out going to Galatasaray. Arsenal fans love nothing more than upsetting Tottenham. They did this when signing Eze from under their rivals' noses last year.
Spurs have also only just survived being relegated. It should be a no-brainer for Baleba to join the Premier League winners ahead of them. Brighton are known for developing top players, and Baleba looks to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister. They have both gone on to be successful at Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively.
