Arsenal are making some serious headway in the transfer window, but with only one signing made fo far (Piero Hincapie), there is a lot of emphasis on who Arsenal should sign next.
Some arguments make themselves. It is obvious where Arsenal need to strengthen: a new winger and potentially a backup midfielder and goalkeeper.
However, what we can say for certain is that Arsenal signing these players would be a step in the wrong direction. Here are three players Arsenal must avoid signing like the plague.
3 transfer targets Arsenal must steer clear of
1. Illan Meslier
The fact that Arsenal are still being linked to Illan Meslier in the big 2026 is mind-boggling.
Yes, Arsenal need to improve on Kepa Arrizabalaga as the backup goalkeeper. Everybody knows that. However, signing Illan Meslier would not do that - He would be a severe downgrade on Kepa.
At this stage, reliable journalist Sami Mokbel thinks Arsenal are 'eyeing' Illian Meslier. I don't think anyone really knows what that means, it's perhaps just a term that sports journalists have agreed to use when the interest is minimal, but just about enough to report.
I eyed eggs to scramble this morning, but I instead went for corn flakes.
Let's hope that Illan Meslier is the option of scrambled eggs. They are delicious, but in this analogy, not the selected option. That should keep all parties happy.
2. Leon Goretzka
Yet another long-term Arsenal transfer target, but his action (or perhaps, lack of action) at the World Cup should put Arsenal off entirely.
Germany was recently eliminated from the World Cup, with no help at all from Leon Goretzka. The long-term Arsenal transfer target was hesitant to take a penalty in the shootout that ultimately sent Paraguay through and Germany home, so he chose not to take one.
Let's call it what it is - That's cowardly from Goretzka. Such behaviour should remove him from every single Arsenal transfer shortlist going forward.
Arsenal need big-game-proven players, not more confidence-building projects. Next.
3. Morgan Rogers
This one is a controversial one. Whether or not Arsenal sign Morgan Rogers depends heavily on his price. The reported price of £130m, though, means Arsenal should take the next available exit in this transfer race.
It's a disgrace what the transfer market has come to. Morgan Rogers has some serious ability, but let's be honest, he doesn't have £130m worth of ability. Not many players do, and Rogers is a long way away from that calibre.
Man City recently invested a similar figure in Elliot Anderson, right? Okay, cool. Taking financial advice from Man City is akin to taking dating advice from that single friend. You know the one I'm talking about.
If Man City want to overspend, let them. Arsenal need to do the opposite of whatever Man City is doing behind closed doors; otherwise, you'll be reading the word 'alleged' a lot more on this website, allegedly.
Unfortunately, surrendering to the market while it is this high is a similar action to shooting yourself in the foot. By paying absurd prices for relatively unproven players, you are saying to the next club you negotiate with that you are easily swayed.
