Arsenal made an offer to sign Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich in January. However, he turned it down. A recent report has proved that he is not someone that Arsenal would want in their squad.
According to BILD, Goretzka was one of the players who (translated from German), "hesitated and thus dodged the challenge" of taking a penalty.
As Goretzka is 31, he is a player who should be taking responsibility in crucial moments such as this. However, he has never been a penalty taker. He took just one in his career when he was at Schalke 04, which he scored.
Germany is looking for scapegoats after being defeated on penalties by Paraguay in the round of 32 at the World Cup, and Goretzka is one of them.
Arsenal do not need Leon Goretzka
Goretzka has experience of winning seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League with Bayern Munich. This could have been useful to Arsenal, but they ended up winning the Premier League anyway. The Gunners eventually lost the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. Goretzka would not have been much use in that anyway.
He is a central midfielder who can play in attacking and defensive roles. The Gunners do not need him, as they have Declan Rice in central midfield. Martin Zubimendi operates in the defensive midfield role. They have also been linked with strengthening the position with the potential acquisitions of Bruno Guimaraes and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The club captain, Martin Odegaard, is Arsenal's attacking midfielder, whilst Eberechi Eze can also play there. The Gunners have also been linked with Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa.
Goretzka is to leave Bayern as his contract expires this summer. The Gunners could snap him up on a free transfer, but they appear to now be focusing on alternative targets.
Goretzka has been linked with AC Milan and Napoli. However, his days at the top of European soccer now appear to be behind him. He can go out on a high after making 48 appearances, scoring five goals and five assists in his final season with Bayern. He won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup this season.
Goretzka's next destination appears to be MLS with the Chicago Fire. The Fire have recently signed Robert Lewandowski from Barcelona. Therefore, Goretzka could link up with his former Bayern teammate in North America. They had great success together in Germany and could do so again in Chicago.
