Despite Kai Havertz getting on the scoresheet for Germany, they were knocked out of the World Cup on penalties by Paraguay.
Havertz was furious after the game and was quoted by Fabrizio Romano, saying, "The last few tournaments were a disaster. We players need to take a long, hard look at ourselves... We're playing for a huge country with a rich football history."
Germany won the World Cup in 2014, and it looked as if we were in an era of German dominance on the international scene. The Germans had just ended Spain's dominance of winning back-to-back European Championships with the World Cup in between.
At the 2016 Euros, Germany got to the semi-finals, where they lost to the hosts and eventual runners-up, France. This was not a bad display, but they then exited the 2018 World Cup at the group stage. They suffered humiliating defeats to Mexico and South Korea.
Havertz would make his debut for Germany in late 2018. His first major tournament with them was the Euro 2020, which was held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Havertz scored twice in the group stages, but Germany were defeated 2-0 by England in the round of 16.
Kai Havertz would have expected to have had more success with Germany
The 2022 World Cup saw Havertz score a brace in a 4-2 win over Costa Rica. However, a draw with Spain and a defeat to Japan meant that they again went out at the group stage.
Pressure was on the Germans as they hosted Euro 2024. Havertz scored two goals in the tournament, but they lost in the quarter-finals to eventual winners Spain.
The World Cup this year was another disappointment, and Julian Nagelsmann's future is now in the balance. This is despite him being contracted to lead his country until after Euro 2028. Many fans would want to see Jurgen Klopp leave his job at Red Bull to take over from Nagelsmann.
As for Havertz, he is only 27, so he should still have at least a couple more major tournaments in him. However, he is injury-prone, which meant he played just 24 times for Arsenal last season. He still scored seven goals with five assists during these matches. This included him scoring in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. He also found the back of the net in a 1-0 win over Burnley in Arsenal's penultimate Premier League game of their title-winning season.
Havertz is now behind Viktor Gyokeres in the pecking order to lead the line for Arsenal. However, there are no current rumors of him departing the club. He is contracted to the Gunners until 2028 and is a versatile forward option for Mikel Arteta.
