While American sports relish it, there's no such thing as a 'free agency frenzy' in football.

The Bosman ruling undoubtedly changed the landscape of the sport, but clubs typically ensure their most prized assets do not depart for nothing following the expiry of their contracts. Liverpool's situation this season is rather anomalous, with three leading protagonists currently running down their deals.

In the rare instances when stars hit the market, their next destination is usually mapped out long before any sort of bidding war can begin. There's a distinct lack of drama.

Cash-strapped clubs across the continent have made good use of free transfers in the not-too-recent past, most notably Inter, who are led by astute operator Beppe Marotta, and Arsenal are unlikely to dabble too much in this market this summer.

Talk of a Kroenke war-chest and Football Manager-like figures are being chucked into rumour mills, aiming to ignite excitement ahead of a crucial window. Arsenal are going to spend big, but could they make a couple of savvy, low-key free agent signings, too?

Here are four potential free transfers to keep an eye on.

1. Leroy Sane

We know that Arsenal boast an interest in Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane.

Sane is currently set to hit the open market, although he recently asserted his desire to remain in Munich off the back of a bright run of form. Bayern are yet to offer the winger a new contract, however, and Arsenal are supposedly keeping a close eye.

The Gunners will bolster their frontline and will make additions in wide areas. While Nico Williams looks like the priority target, Sane is a good alternative, despite his age and sky-high wages.

The German international hasn't been as destructive as many projected after returning to the Bundesliga due to injuries, but he's shown over the past couple of seasons that he still has plenty to offer. He worked with Mikel Arteta at Manchester City, too.

2. Jonathan David

Jonathan David shouldn't be Arsenal's number one striker target, and he won't be. The Gunners have their heart set on either Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, or Benjamin Sesko.

However, could the club make a second striker addition this summer?

Gabriel Jesus tore his ACL in January, while Kai Havertz underwent hamstring surgery in February. Some might suggest the club would be taking a risk by relying on this pair as cover for the blockbuster striker addition.

If they fancy adding adding a second sharpshooter to the mix, Arsenal shouldn't look further than Canadian international David. The Lille star boasts a well-rounded profile and has been a reliable goalscorer in Ligue 1 since he helped the club to the title four years ago.

The 25-year-old is poised to have plenty of suitors, however, and he surely won't settle for playing second fiddle.

3. Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa

Look, we might be doing some straw clutching here, but Arsenal are going to need to sign a couple of midfielders. It's highly unlikely that the club will turn to free agency to refresh their engine room, but Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa could be on the market.

The midfielder has the option to extend his stay at Napoli until 2027, but reports from Italy suggest he wants to leave the club this summer.

Anguissa, like the rest of the Napoli squad, endured a down year in 2023/24, but he's returned to a level reminiscent of his best form under Antonio Conte this term. He was a mainstay during the club's title triumph two seasons back.

We saw a bit of Anguissa in the Premier League with Fulham, but the Cameroonian international has developed since, benefitting from his ventures overseas. He's a steady Eddie across the board with a penchant for the spectacular in possession and capable of contributing in the final third. Anguissa offers plenty without the ball and has the capacity to operate from a deeper position in the build-up phase, too.

This one won't happen, but he's the best potential midfield free agent on the market.

4. Alex Meret

Arsenal are also expected to sign a back-up to David Raya once Neto returns to Bournemouth after Aaron Ramsdale left the club last summer.

Espanyol's Joan Garcia looks like the route the Gunners will go down as Arteta aims to Spaniardise this football club. Garcia's excellent and one for the future, but the club will have to shell out a decent amount for a backup who's not going to see much of the field.

If they want to go big this summer, perhaps a cheaper option between the posts makes more sense. Alex Meret is no superstar; he's the epitome of a Premier League backup despite his Italy caps.

Napoli have the option to extend his contract, but it's gone quiet on that front since the start of the year. Still, I'd be surprised if Meret walks in June.
