A January transfer window take that Arsenal fans won't love

It's a nice frustration to have.

The festivities are well and truly over, but that doesn't mean the gift-giving is done. In fact, in many ways, it's only just beginning, as Arsenal turn their attention to the January transfer window.

The January transfer window opened today, and while it is oftentimes not as busy as the summer transfer window, there is still a certain aura about a transfer window that cannot be matched.

January windows of the past have seen the likes of Leandro Trossard, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nwankwo Kanu arrive. So, there are still opportunities, right?

Well, maybe not so much this year. Any Arsenal fan expecting to see plenty of business this month might be sorely disappointed.

Arsenal fans must prepare for a quiet January transfer window

Arsenal do not need to sign anyone this month. It's a nice position to be in, but speaking about the transfer window, it's a boring one.

While fans will apply a 'it's a want, not a need' strategy, it's hard to imagine the decision-makers at the club following suit. Where Arsenal can save some pennies this month, they are more likely to do exactly that.

In the previous summer transfer window, Arsenal invested in their squad. With the heavily-scrutinized center forward position filled, center back depth added, and even some options on either wing, Arsenal has a nearly-perfect squad.

I know, I know. Nearly perfect does not win titles. To beat the best, you have to be the best, and with Man City breathing down Arsenal's neck, this saying rings true now more than ever.

However, January has never been about making perfect squads. It has always been about filling gaps that had been made throughout the start of the season.

Bizarrely enough, Arsenal has no gaps in the squad. Gabriel Magalhães and Kai Havertz, two long-term injuries, are both available for Arsenal again. Nowadays, Arsenal's injury list is tiny (touch wood).

And look, not needing to make any signings is a good thing. Five years ago, it was a dire need. If you were to ask any Arsenal fan which position they would rather be in, they would choose today's position, not the position of five years ago.

It will likely be a long, tedious month. Fans may watch rival clubs strengthening and feel left out. However, the plan is the plan. Those clubs need to strengthen, but Arsenal does not. If anything, signing players and unnecessarily inflating the squad might do more harm than good.

Still, we'll see if Mikel Arteta has anything up his sleeve this month.
