Arsenal's best alternative for Julian Alvarez couldn't be more obvious

Arsenal have been linked with Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid recently. However, it appears that the Argentine has his heart set on joining Barcelona instead. Therefore, the Gunners need to focus on signing another forward, Ferran Torres.

Torres' future at Barcelona is in doubt after talks over a new contract stalled. His current deal expires in June of next year, which has led to speculation that he could be on his way out of the club.

Fabrizio Romano quoted Torres talking about his future: "I’ll be trying to make the best decision to make my family and myself happy. Only this matters."

It is believed that Torres is single after reportedly splitting up with his girlfriend during the World Cup. However, he is known to be close with his mother and sister, whilst little is known of his father.

Torres is from Foios, which is in the Valencian Community. He came through at the local club Valencia, where the forward won the Copa del Rey. He played 97 times for the La Liga side before joining Manchester City.

With City, he won the Premier League and EFL Cup. He was also part of their side that got to the Champions League final before losing to Chelsea. However, after falling out of favor and suffering a metatarsal fracture, Torres returned to Spain with Barcelona in January 2022. In total, he made just 43 appearances for City.

Torres has since won three La Liga titles, the Supercopa de España three times, and the Copa del Rey with Barca. He has now represented Barca over 200 times and appeared settled there before contract negotiations stagnated.

Ferran Torres would fit in well at Arsenal

He is predominantly a center-forward and has just scored the winning goal for Spain against Argentina in the World Cup final. Therefore, his confidence should be through the roof. Torres could compete with Viktor Gyokeres for a starting spot up front for Arsenal. However, Torres can also play on either wing.

Arsenal need a left-winger after letting Leandro Trossard join Besiktas. That position is seen as the Gunners' weak spot, as they now only have Gabriel Martinelli as an option there. Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid has also been linked with a move to the Gunners. However, that transfer coming to fruition appears to be a pipe dream.

Morgan Rogers was also heavily linked with Arsenal, but the club was priced out of signing him from Aston Villa. Rogers eventually joined Chelsea for £117 million. Torres, who has less than a year left on his contract at Barca, would be much more affordable to Arsenal.

Arsenal would face competition for Torres' services, as Paris Saint-Germain and even Real Madrid are also interested in his services. However, it is unlikely that Barca would sell him to their bitter rivals, Real Madrid. Also, Los Blancos already have Kylian Mbappe, so Torres would lack game time if he were to join the other giant of Spanish football.

PSG is an attractive option as they have just won two back-to-back Champions League titles. They also have the Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé as their striker. Opportunities to play on the wing for the Ligue 1 side could also be limited, as they have Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doué. Bradley Barcola is also still on their books, but has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

Arsenal would appear to be the best fit for Torres. He would arguably start ahead of Gyokeres, whilst there is also a place for Torres to play on the left wing in a system that would fit both players. Torres has unfinished business in English football after lasting just a season and a half at City. Therefore, a transfer to the Gunners appears to be a no-brainer if the opportunity arises.
