Arsenal have officially confirmed the signing of experienced midfielder Christian Norgaard from Brentford.

The former Bees captain has joined for a reported fee of £10million with a potential £2m-£5m in add-ons. He has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with an option to extend for a further year.

Norgaard was first linked with the Gunners in June with Mikel Arteta's side viewing him as ideal backup for fellow new signing Martin Zubimendi. Negotiations were swift with Brentford before a deal was completed earlier this week prompting Arsenal to make the official announcement today.

Norgaard joins Arsenal from London rivals Brentford, having spent six seasons in west London, scoring 13 goals and providing 18 assists in 196 appearances.

Fans were initially hesitant about the deal considering his age and lesser ability, but were quick to realise he will make a good cover option. Having captained the Bees for two seasons, Norgaard has earned valuable experience as a leader and a Premier League player, making him a great asset for the Gunners.

The Dane is Arsenal's third signing of the summer transfer window, following Kepa Arrizabalaga and Martin Zubimendi through the door, and definitely won't be the last. The club are still actively targeting Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera and Eberechi Eze.

On bringing Norgaard to the club, sporting director Andrea Berta said: "We’re very pleased to welcome Christian Norgaard to the club. He has been a consistent high performer in the Premier League and brings many qualities to our club.

"He is a leader, and a player with high tactical intelligence and versatility who will have a very positive impact to the squad. We welcome Christian to Arsenal."

Speaking on the signing, manager Mikel Arteta said: "We’re delighted to welcome Christian to Arsenal. He is an international player with a wealth of experience of the Premier League. He has proven leadership skills and a strong character which will be invaluable to our squad.

"He is a strong midfielder with excellent tactical awareness and versatility. He also has physical presence and intelligence which will give us added depth and balance.

Christian will bring a lot to the group both on and off the pitch, and we’re excited to start working with him in this next chapter of his career. We welcome Christian and his family to Arsenal."

With his Brentford number six currently occupied by Gabriel Magalhaes, Norgaard is set to take the number 16 shirt, last worn by Rob Holding, and will join up with his new teammates immediately as the Gunners edge closer to the beginning of their pre-season campaign.
