Arsenal are 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool, but Mikel Arteta isn't about to throw in the towel.

As far as disastrous weekends go in the Premier League, Arsenal had about as bad a one as you could think of.

With the potential to cut the lead at the summit to five points, the Gunners, who were at home to lowly West Ham, laid an egg and didn't just drop one point, but three in the 1-0 loss.

So that was bad enough with the Gunners handing over all the momentum to Liverpool ahead of its clash with Manchester City and Arne Slot's team used it to their advantage in a 2-0 win.

Arsenal suffer horror weekend of Premier League football

That all makes for a horrendous weekend of football for the Gunners, and now they must pick themselves up off the canvas and get ready for a Nottingham Forest side that has only lost twice all season at home.

But there is so much doom and gloom around the team right now that it can be hard to find many positive things to cling to.

"When you are trying to build that momentum, and we put so much into it, especially with the circumstances that we have, it was a very hard one to take," Mikel Arteta said on the West Ham defeat via arsenal.com. "The reality is there are so many games to play, and you have to get back to it. You have to have the levels and the consistency and the hunger to go again, and that’s what we are going to do on Wednesday."

Since the defeat to West Ham, we have spoken at length about Arsenal's mentality and how the squad will react to such a disastrous weekend.

And Arteta brought up the "hunger" and that is another interesting side note that deserves consideration. After a season that has been derailed due to injuries and a lack of investment, will the squad have the drive and the ambition to pick itself up and go again?

As we have mentioned, it is only nine points between Arsenal in second, and Newcastle in fifth, and 12 league games to go, that is ample time for a seismic slide to happen.

But whether or not Arsenal is now up for the fight is a question we will get answered against Forest, and if the answer is no, then we fear what could be about to happen to Arteta's Gunners.
