Takehiro Tomiyasu is set to leave Arsenal after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract, according to BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel.

The Japan international has suffered tremendously with injuries since joining the club for a £16m fee from Bologna in 2021. When available, he proved to be a reliable defender for the Gunners, but his fitness has simply been far too inconsistent.

It'll be sad to see Tomiyasu leave Arsenal, especially considering he has been a fan-favourite for most of his time in north London, but it's hard to disagree this is the right decision.

Takehiro Tomiyasu set for early contract termination

Tomiyasu's Arsenal deal was set to run until 2026 with an option to extend by a further year. However, the Gunners have deemed the best course of action would be to terminate his deal now due to his ongoing fitness problems.

The defender spent practically the entirety of last season out with injury, playing just six minutes of football throughout the campaign, a substitute appearance in a 3-1 win over Southampton in October.

He suffered badly with a knee injury that kept him from being available and is still dealing with that now as he faces another five months out of action due to rehabilitation after he underwent surgery in February.

Throughout his time at Arsenal, Tomiyasu missed a total of 690 days and 107 games due to injury and that prevented him from ever being able to provide the consistency his side needed from him.

He did impress when on the pitch however, scoring two goals and providing six assists in 84 appearances in red and white. His defensive contributions during the Gunners' hunt for Champions League football during his debut season and his final goal for the club, an equaliser against Everton on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign will always be remembered.

With Arsenal also looking to bring Cristhian Mosquera to the club, it is highly likely Tomiyasu would have struggled for game time if he was to return to fitness. His departure should open up a place in the squad for the Spaniard.

While it is disappointing and upsetting to see Tomiyasu leave Arsenal, it's hard to disagree with it being the right decision. With just a year left on his contract, he would have missed a lot of his final campaign and it would have made no sense to activate an extension due to his fitness uncertainty. It's a sad ending for the Japan international, but I am certain he will be remembered as a Gunners cult hero.
