Sunday was, in the end, a day of celebration for Arsenal. That David Raya save, that Leandro Trossard deflected shot and that VAR decision from Darren England, as well as Chris Kavanagh's now iconic "after review" soliloquy, may have just delivered the Gunners their first Premier League title in 22 years. While gaining three invaluable points however, Arsenal may have lost a key player.
It was not all good news to come out of the London Stadium. Just before the half hour mark, after a challenge with Crysencio Summerville, Ben White suffered an injury and had to be replaced. This led to a saga in of itself. Mikel Arteta initially sent on MartÃn Zubimendi, moving Declan Rice to right-back. However, this poorly timed experiment was ditched at half time, with Cristhian Mosquera coming on at right-back, with Zubimendi himself hooked later on for Martin Ødegaard.
Turning attention back to White, has he potentially played his final game for the club? Well, on Tuesday, Arsenal confirmed that the England international "has sustained a significant medial knee ligament injury". They add that "our medical team are now managing Ben’s recovery and rehabilitation programme... [with] the aim of Ben being ready for the start of our pre-season preparations".
Meantime, as reported by David Ornstein and James McNicholas of the Athletic, the "full extent of the issue is yet to be established", but this does end White's World Cup hopes, after appearing for England for the first time in four years back in March. They note that the 28 year old also missed three months of last season following knee surgery, so the hope will be that this is not a reoccurrence of the same issue.
In the short term, this could cause Arteta something of a major headache at right-back. First-choice Jurriën Timber has missed the last 12 matches due to an ankle issue, not seen since hobbling off during the first half of the famous win over Everton on 14 March. This has seen White enjoy an extended run in the team, appearing rusty at times, but looking much sharper in recent outings.
For Timber, no return date is publicly known but, especially with White sidelined, they'll be even more desperate to get the Dutchman back. For the final two Premier League games against Burnley and Crystal Palace, it would seem likely that Cristhian Mosquera will deputise out of position at right-back, as he has done numerous times since arriving.
After, hopefully, a celebratory conclusion to this campaign, attention will turn to the Champions League Final at the Puskás Aréna against Paris Saint-Germain. Of course, it will be gutting for White to miss out on playing in the biggest game in club football, even if he's probably never watched one.
Now, and you may have noticed this, les Rouge-et-Bleu have a pretty decent left-winger in their ranks. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has scored 10 Champions League goals this season, only Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane can boast more. Meanwhile Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué or Senny Mayulu could all operate on that side too; they aren't bad either. Thus, Arsenal's chances of glory in Budapest surely exponentially increase with a fully fit Timber in the team, so let's hope he is close to a return.
