Martin Odegaard is the latest Arsenal player to be eliminated from the World Cup, as his beloved Norway were beaten in extra time by England. England boss Thomas Tuchel had nothing but respect for the Norway captain, though, even interrupting his full-time media duties to shake his hand.
In a video that is circulating on social media, you can see a clearly exhausted Odegaard (as any captain would be after that World Cup showing) speaking to a reporter. Then, he looks to his right, and in comes Tuchel with a handshake. To which Odegaard gladly accepts, and congratulates Tuchel on England making it through.
Martin Odegaard bids farewell to a memorable World Cup
Odegaard was phenomenal at this World Cup. Norway stole the hearts of many, and it wasn't just because of their performances on the pitch. Even off the pitch, their fandom shone through - Norway boasted some of the best fans at the World Cup.
Odegaard himself was not passive in Norway, proudly representing stateside. The Norwegian captain was an active voice, and a bright personality in all of their showings. From beating the drum for their famous row to making training sessions fun for his countrymen, Odegaard was key to Norway making it further than they probably thought heading into this tournament.
Next season, Mikel Arteta has some serious food for thought. At the World Cup, Odegaard proved that when he is handed the keys to a direct relationship with his striker, he can be the game-changer.
Odegaard's 4 assists are only bettered by Michael Olise, who has been the best player at the tournament so far.
- Michael Olise (France) – 5 assists
- Bruno Guimaraes (Brazil) – 4 assists
- Brahim Diaz (Morocco) – 4 assists
- Martin Odegaard (Norway) – 4 assists
- Roberto Alvarado (Mexico) – 3 assists
- Anthony Gordon (England) – 3 assists
- Alexander Isak (Sweden) – 3 assists
- Kylian Mbappe (France) – 3 assists
- Bukayo Saka (England) – 3 assists
- Andreas Schjelderup (Norway) – 3 assists
- Florian Wirtz (Germany) – 3 assists
It certainly helps that Odegaard is responsible for assisting Haaland, who can make a goal out of even the slightest chance, but it still bodes well for him at Arsenal.
Last season, fans were beginning to underrate Odegaard. Some were even starting to side with him being sold in the summer, which, frankly, would be a cardinal sin.
Tuchel knows a top player when he sees one - heck, he's worked with his fair share in the past - this sign of respect is yet another nod to Odegaard being someone Arsenal fans should be proud to call their captain.
