Arsenal fans should not panic about the transfer window despite Morgan Rogers blow

Arsenal suffered a huge blow to their transfer plans as their main target, Morgan Rogers, has opted to join Chelsea in a £117m deal.

His choice is tipping Gooners over the edge, and perhaps for good reason: the champions are yet to make the most of their ‘Champions’ status/prize money having signed Illan Meslier as a free back-up goalkeeper and agreed terms with Christos Tzolis of Club Brugge – elation for the latter being tamed by the concurrent exit of Leandro Trossard.

But to panic about transfers in mid-July? Really? Fans in that headspace must not recall either who is in charge of club transfers or the events of recent years.

That man is Andrea Berta, someone known for exploring multiple names at once and adept at buying key targets within strict financial parameters; one need only look at the deals for Piero Hincapié and Cristhian Mosquera last year to gain reassurance on that front.

Furthermore, Arsenal have been in this position so many times before and come out in good shape on the other side.

Prior to Rogers, there was Mykhailo Mudryk; before Viktor Gyokeres, there was Benjamin Sesko; cast your mind back to 2022 when Arsenal sought Dusan Vlahovic, only for his Juventus dream to prompt a pivot towards Gabriel Jesus.

Some of those sagas (Mudryk for certain, perhaps Vlahovic too) proved to be a bullet dodged, while others (Sesko) proved to be much of a muchness as both Sesko and Gyokeres went on to enjoy good seasons in English football last term.

So, there is still a long way to go until the deadline and Arsenal have shown themselves to be smooth operators when things have not gone according to plan – even when failed transfer swoops have led to major headloss.

Mikel Arteta might well share the anger of Arsenal fans because, once again, he is missing out on his number one target. But to spend £117m on anyone is risky in the extreme and seems particularly ill-advised for Rogers given how the Aston Villa man boasts many of the same attributes as incumbent Eberechi Eze.

Keep calm. Go out and buy a true left winger. Let Chelsea continue the crazy spending which, under Clearlake, has led them to a single top-four finish - their 'shiny toy' syndrome has not gotten them far to this point.

Arsenal will do what they always do and find a strong alternative, so us fans do not need to panic.
