Arsenal fans have been left stunned after the Athletic revealed the club could still move to sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid this summer.

With deals for Viktor Gyokeres, Cristhian Mosquera and Noni Madueke close to being finalised and the club also preparing to approach Crystal Palace to discuss a move for Eberechi Eze in the coming week, supporters feared the winger was no longer on the Gunners' radar. However, those concerns have been eradicated.

A move for Rodrygo was mentioned in the same sentence as Eze, meaning it could be a case of one or the other, but the report claims the interest may not develop until later in the summer, meaning there could be varying circumstances that affect a potential move.

Arsenal's spending has reached high levels this summer and that led to many fans to theorising it will come to an end once the long-awaited signing of Gyokeres is complete. However, that has since been shut down.

James McNicholas of the Athletic wrote this morning: "If Arsenal can add Gyokeres, Madueke and Mosquera to the signings of Martin Zubimendi, Kepa, and Norgaard, they will have attended to many of their positional needs.

"They are not yet closed for business, however. Arsenal are still considering bringing in an additional attacking player. Their interest in the likes of Rodrygo and Eberechi Eze remains, but may not develop until later in the window — and could potentially be offset by securing some sales."

Some reports have claimed the Gunners will be moving to sign Eze this week, but this claim states otherwise. It appears as if their spending will conclude for now with sales paving the way for a move for either the Englishman or Rodrygo later in the summer.

The phrasing may suggest a deal would be for either player, not both, and while that will disappoint Arsenal fans, it is expected. Both would cost high amounts and it is highly unlikely both could be brought in in the same window.

With a move for Eze appearing slightly more advanced than one for Rodrygo, fans would be forgiven for thinking he is the primary option out of the two. However, supporters will be glad to hear the Gunners are still interested in bringing the Brazilian to the Emirates.

It may be a while until Arsenal make a move for Rodrygo, if they even do, but I for one would still be very excited about the prospect of him joining the club. Maybe we'll even get him and Eze, but that could be wishful thinking.
