Arsenal fans' worst Timber fears might just have been confirmed by Ronald Koeman

Could Jurriën Timber be fit in time to feature in the Champions League Final?

Arsenal will go into the Champions League final against holders Paris Saint-Germain as underdogs, but with full belief that they can defy the odds in Budapest. Well, to stand a good chance of doing so, Mikel Arteta will need all of his best players available, but his hopes of having this dream scenario may not come to fruition.

Jurriën Timber has not featured since hobbling off against Everton all the way back on 14 March, and the desperation to have the Dutchman return intensified when Benjamin White suffered a long-term injury against West Ham. Well, it remains to be seen if there's any chance of this happening. Speaking to Dutch television on Monday, national team manager Ronald Koeman had this to say about Timber:

"He is training again to see if he can make the Champions League final, and be available for the World Cup, but it does not look rosy at the moment."

Koeman added that Timber's recovery has been a "rollercoaster ride", which is probably not what Arsenal fans want to hear right now. Fitness permitting, the 24 year old would likely be Oranje's first-choice right-back come the summer, based on their recent matches, competing with Denzel Dumfries, Lutsharel Geertruida and Jeremie Frimpong for that spot.

Before the Netherlands' tournament opener against Japan at AT&T Stadium in Texas on 14 June, Timber will be desperate to be involved in the biggest game in club football. In the absence of both him and White, Cristhian Mosquera is the likely starter at right-back. The Spaniard, a centre-back by trade, has more commonly seen action at full-back, unable to break up the Gabriel-Saliba axis.

Monday night's hard-fought 1-0 win over Burnley was actually only Mosquera's third start at full-back, the others against Sporting CP and Man City in April, but he has regularly come on as a substitute in that role. While generally pretty solid, he offers not a lot going forward, so is far from an ideal deputy.

What is concerning Gooners is the fact that Paris Saint-Germain do have some pretty decent wide-options in their ranks. A starting front three of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola, with Désiré Doué in reserve, is not bad, is it? The thought of Kvaradona running at Mosquera one vs one in a wide area is a pretty terrifying one, with the Georgian having scored ten times in this season's Champions League; only Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane have more.

Timber, for his part, had established himself as, arguably, the best defensive full-back on the planet prior to suffering this latest set back. Thus, having him available at the Puskás Aréna would be an absolute game-changer, but Koeman's latest comments do not suggest this to be a likely possibility.
