Arsenal legend Martin Keown claims the Premier League title race could depend on one star's return from injury.
Arsenal drew 2-2 against Sunderland over last weekend in an attempt to go six points clear at the top of the Premier League. They are now four points clear after Manchester City's win over Liverpool, but there is a long way to go.
Even though the team almost got to the finish line with three points, there was a
The former footballer-turned pundit was asked about Arsenal's title challenges this season, and he talked in depth about the injury issues that the Gunners have, and how they will need a healthy squad to challenge for titles this season - and namedropped one player in particular.
Keown said Arsenal need Victor Gyokeres back as soon as possible, and he is spot on
He said: “Arsenal just need to keep winning their games. They’ve not done an awful lot wrong - they’re top of the Premier League table and the Champions League table as well.
"I don’t think you look over your shoulder, you look ahead, and you go and grasp it and you take the opportunities that are there.
“What you need is a full selection of players to pick from, and they’ve not quite got that at the moment.
"It was an issue not having Gyökeres available and I hope this doesn’t become a story of the No9. Obviously, Haaland is different class, but Arsenal need theirs back on the pitch quickly.”
He is spot on. No matter what you think about Gyokeres' performances so far this season. No matter how good or bad he has been according to fans, it is always important to have a natural striker up top.
There are a number of reasons for it, especially for Gyokeres' case. Gyokeres is a brilliant player, and while he has not hit the numbers everyone expects of him, he is still doing things that go under the radar.
His linkup is improving after every game, he is becoming more and more involved. It is also worth noting that he is always a huge target in the box that will inevitably attract defenders, leaving space for other players to thrive on - even if he does not score.
And, finally, Gyokeres has seemed like the type of player who can score with limited touches or involvement in the game. If he gets an inch of space, it is likely he will put the ball in the back of the net.
