Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard got in on the act against Dinamo Zagreb, netting the Gunners' third goal in a 3-0 win.
To say that it has been a long time between goals for Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard would be an understatement, with the Norwegian being oddly absent far too often from the Gunners' goal-scoring stats.
But that changed midweek against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League as Odegaard rounded out the 3-0 win with a neat tap-in during injury time after Leandro Trossard's cross found the Gunners skipper.
Odegaard's last goal came against West Ham back in November in the 5-2 win for the Gunners and his goal against Dinamo Zagreb was just his second all season from 22 appearances in all competitions.
Martin is still a long way off his 11 goals in all competitions from last season, and while it was only his second goal, Odegaard says it's something he was waiting for.
“It was nice to get [a goal]," Odegaard said via arsenal.com. "I’ve been waiting for it, I had a lot of chances that I missed. I was in the right area, I attacked the box and I got the goal, so it was nice.”
Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Kai Havertz are finding their shooting boots, so the Gunners' attacking woes appear to be slowly dissipating, but that doesn't mean reinforcements shouldn't be brought in.
With the win, Arsenal now needs only a point against Girona next week to be guaranteed to skip the playoff round of the Champions League, which would then give the squad a nice little break in between games, something that is desperately needed.
“It’s a busy schedule, we want to be top eight first of all, to go directly to there, but we’ll get some rest as well, and that’s always good. Hopefully we can do that," Odegaard added.
With the Gunners in a great position to progress, some positive momentum is now building after a rough patch that led some to think the sky was falling in.
Of course, it is only one game, and the Gunners must maintain the rage against Wolves in the Premier League with the margin for error in chasing down leaders Liverpool now almost zero.
Odegaard was back amongst the goals and while it was a tap-in, the confidence gained from that and the win over Dinamo Zagreb might power the Gunners to go on a little run here and reel in Liverpool.
Martin needed it. So too, did Arsenal.
