Arsenal released an official statement this morning, confirming that Jonas Eidevall has left his position as head coach of the women's first team.

Arsenal have had a poor start to the season. Across all competitions, they have won just one match, against Leicester City. They have also been victim to some nasty results, including losing to Bayern Munich and rivals Chelsea.

So, changes needed to be implemented at Arsenal. Thankfully, the club has recognised the need for a coaching reshuffle within the women's team, particularly since Arsenal are one of the biggest WSL clubs.

For a long time, Jonas Eidevall has been under the spotlight. The Swedish head coach hasn't exactly inspired Arsenal to change their fortunes, so many questioned his legitimacy.

Arsenal release statement about necessary head coach resignation

According to the official Arsenal website, Jonas Eidevall has now resigned from his position as Arsenal women's head coach. Now, the former assistant manager Renée Slegers will take change in an interim position, with immediate affect.

Despite the discontent of fans, Arsenal appear to have dealt with this matter amicably. In fact, sporting director Edu Gaspar praised Jonas Eidevall and wished him well for the future.

In his own words, Edu said: “We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club... We have great respect for the dedication and commitment he showed to our women’s first team and recognise the role he has played in the growth and development... We all wish him the very best for the future."

Renée Slegers will take charge for Arsenal's next match against Vålerenga. They will host the Norwegian side in the second UEFA Women's Champions League match.

Needless to say, Arsenal must win their next match. They are in a poor run of form and they especially need a result in the Champions League to build back their goal difference.

Thinking long-term, Arsenal will now be looking at the right options to replace Jonas Eidevall as the head-coach. Slegers deserves the utmost respect from supports for stepping up to the role and the club will certainly support her.

Speaking on this, Edu said: “Our focus will now turn to the process of appointing a new Head Coach, and in the meantime, supporting Renée [Slegers], as she takes interim charge of the team starting with two important fixtures this week.”

Who knows? Slegers might even impress to the point that Arsenal consider her for a permanent position. It can certainly be said that things will only improve at Arsenal.

We wish Jonas Eidevall the best for his future endeavours. However, from Arsenal's perspective, the mentality of "only up from here" must be applied.
