Arsenal's midfield now has too many good players for one XI

Arsenal's midfield has gone from being already good to one of the best in the world with Bruno Guimarães's arrival at the club.

It begs a different kind of question, though, one that Arsenal fans probably wouldn't want to answer. One that Arsenal, the club itself, probably does not want to think about just a couple of months after winning the Premier League title for the first time in 20 years.

For any big club to start a run of winning big tournaments every single season, some players have to sacrifice. It's imperative that that happens. It's the only way that a club has good talent in one position as starters and as backups.

Look at the three-peat Real Madrid team. Their central midfield was always Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, and Casemiro. But even their backups were some of the best midfielders in their positions. Mateo Kovacic, James Rodriguez, and so many others sat on the bench and played incredibly well whenever they got the opportunity.

However, like with any of those teams, these players who are obviously talented end up leaving the club to get more minutes elsewhere.

Kovacic left for Chelsea in 2018, and James Rodriguez also left to join Bayern Munich in 2017.

It is a part and parcel for any big club to have great players leave for more minutes. And even though Arsenal probably don't want to think about it, it might happen with them as well.

Arsenal have seven midfielders that can play important roles for most clubs in the world

This is the situation for their midfield right now. They have three guaranteed starters in Declan Rice, Bruno Guimarães, and Martin Ødegaard.

However, they spent nearly £60 million on signing Martin Zubimendi just one season ago. They also have a brilliant talent in Myles Lewis-Skelly, who forced his way into the midfield after initially playing as their left-back. He started the Champions League final and was one of the best players wearing red in that game.

They also have Eberechi Eze, another player that Arsenal signed for a good amount of money just last summer. Mikel Merino came in the season before - and is also a striker, apparently.

Now, there is a difference between the quality of the other three guaranteed starters and the three players that remain on the bench as of now. But that does not mean these three players will be staying on the bench for most big clubs in the world.

Arsenal currently have some of the best players in their midfield. But eventually, this problem that is deemed a good one to have will eventually lead to painful departures that Arsenal fans probably wouldn't want to see.

That is the biggest negative about signing such brilliant players. You always lose out on someone or the other because they're not getting enough time on the pitch.

These Arsenal players will probably stay and continue to fight for their place in the starting XI, but eventually someone will have to sacrifice their playing time and sit on the bench for the good of the team. And that is where the problem starts.

Maybe that happens in one or two seasons. Maybe after that. But until that point comes, Arsenal will enjoy the fruits of this midfield - which is the main and most important thing.

But eventually, they will realize that despite having such brilliant talents in the midfield, it also has its disadvantages. And one of them is that someone always ends up leaving.
