Chelsea have renewed their interest in signing Arsenal's young star, Ethan Nwaneri this summer, according to Alex Goldberg.
Arsenal let Nwaneri go to Marseille on a loan in the winter of last season in the hopes that the Englishman would get some much-needed minutes. He was playing well at the start, with some really strong performances at his new club.
However, just a few weeks later, the manager who wanted him at Marseille in the first place in Roberto De Zerbi, ended up leaving the club.
He then did not get many minutes at Marseille, and fell down the pecking order at the club. It was a given that Nwaneri would then report back to Arsenal at the end of the season, and his future would be decided from there.
Arsenal's pain could unfortunately become Chelsea's gain
The emergence of Max Dowman, coupled with the number of signings that Arsenal have made with Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze - all of whom acquire Nwaneri's position - has meant that the 20-year-old may be looking elsewhere to find valuable minutes. He could end up staying, but the chances are slim.
Everyone knows that the talent is there - Nwaneri has been one of the most impressive and talented players to come out of Arsenal's academy in recent years - and that is why Chelsea are now renewing their interest in the player.
Chelsea were interested in him last summer, too, but have now chosen to reignite their interest in Nwaneri in the hopes of getting him to Stamford Bridge.
Now, this leaves the club with a few questions to answer, and the same goes for Nwaneri.
First of all: it would inevitably be a good thing for Chelsea's sake if Nwaneri goes there. No matter how much he plays there, he has more talent than a lot of players that Chelsea have in that position.
However, why would Arsenal want to do that? Let's say Chelsea want the player to play a lot, and they sign him and he gets regular minutes - why would Arsenal want to benefit one of their rivals? It is worth noting that there are a lot of clubs that could take Nwaneri at the moment, and he would play good minutes for them.
At Chelsea, he may not, which begs the question: is it really a good thing for Nwaneri, either? Maybe, if he plays a lot. But, the thing with Chelsea is the amount of players they have in every position. Playing time is not guaranteed, especially with Cole Palmer occupying similar positions.
Would Nwaneri want to settle for a potentially small role (albeit bigger than what he may have at Arsenal), or would it be better to wait for more interest?
