Arsenal are in the market for midfielders in the summer, and Sandro Tonali is now being linked with the Gunners in a possible move, says Fabrizio Romano.

Tonali is one of the very best midfielders in the country, and is widely expected to be moving from Newcastle United in the upcoming summer transfer window.

He has built an excellent midfield partnership with Bruno Gumoraes, but unfortunately for Newcastle fans, that could now be broken as Tonali's exit rumors have grown in the last few weeks.

Fabrizio Romano, on his YouTube channel, talked about Arsenal's plans for the upcoming transfer window, and the journalist reported that they are in the market for a midfielder.

In that same video, he also talked about the Italian player's inclination towards a possible departure, and what that could mean for Arsenal.

He said: “One thing that I can guarantee is that Arsenal will eventually work on midfielders in the summer. I think there is a strong possibility to see Sandro Tonali moving in the summer, so let’s see with Arsenal, but it’s not only Arsenal.”

That last line basically sums it up. Arsenal will undoubtedly show interest, but it is clear that they will not be the only one. This is just the author's prediction, but Liverpool might also look for a midfielder of Tonali's quality and profile, and if Manchester United want a midfielder who can replace Casemiro while also providing a lot of on-ball qualities, Tonali might be the guy for it.

Obviously, Arsenal's pull is just as high, because of how good they are at the moment and how big they have historically been. Tonali would be a brilliant addition to this Arsenal side should he leave Newcastle in the summer, and there are plenty of reasons for it.

Tonali would have to play right behind Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, which is a position currently acquired by Martin Zubimendi. There are some things Zubimendi is excellent at, and he has no doubt been one of Arsenal's best players this season, but Tonali is going to be a clear upgrade on Zubimendi, no matter which way you look at it.

He is defensively better than Zubimendi, is more creative going forward, and is a much better physical presence that would help in the Premier League.

Obviously, Zubimendi helps control the tempo of the game, and he will play a lot of minutes even if Arsenal sign Tonali. Tonali would not only help them in that sense, but he would also bring in squad depth for Rice.

If at any point Rice gets injured, Tonali is a brilliant replacement for him for what he provides going forward.

He is fully capable of playing the pivot role as well as the box-to-box role that Arsenal have put Rice in, and this is a move that, while on paper seems harsh, makes perfect sense for the Gunners.
