Arsenal’s stunning goals tally changes the “boring” narrative completely

The idea that Arsenal are boring to watch is disproven by these numbers

All season long, the discussion around Arsenal has been media members and rivals fans labelling Mikel Arteta's team "boring" and "over-reliant on set-pieces". Now that the Gunners have got over the line and been crowned Premier League champions, with the small matter of a Champions League final to come, you might think that this discourse will quieten down, but don't bank on it.

Well, the actual statistics laugh in the fact of the idea that Arsenal are boring. Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Noni Madueke saw Arteta's side beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on the final day of the Premier League season. This took the Gunners' tally to 120 goals across all competitions this season, the fourth-highest tally in the club's entire 140 year history.

This season's goal tally surpasses their highest previous amount under Artera of 113 achieve two seasons ago, the year they missed out on the final day, despite accumulating 89 points. Meantime, it is also more goals scored by the Invincibles, or any of Arsène Wenger's title winning campaigns for that matter. Two more in Budapest on Saturday would overtake the goals scored in 2016/17, as Wenger's side beat Chelsea in that year's FA Cup final, his last major honour at the club.

This would leave Artera's current team behind only the title winning sides of George Allison and Herbert Chapman from the 1930s. The latter led the Gunners to their first-ever First Division title in 1931, scoring 127 goals in the league, a tally likely never to be surpassed, as well as 60 goals away from home, an English record to this day.

So, who have Arsenal scored these 120 goals against, and is there any stat-padding in there?

Of all 34 different opponents Arsenal have faced this season, Liverpool are the only side they failed to score against. There was a small amount of racking up the goals when facing lower calibre opponents, scoring four against both Wigan and Portsmouth in the FA Cup, but this team cannot be accused of that. They scored eight times against Tottenham, seven when meeting Chelsea and six across three encounters with Atlético Madrid.

Thus, while this team's defence gets plenty of plaudits, and rightly so, the attackers warrant some praise too. These players are already legends forever, but this will be taken to an entirely new stratosphere if, by Saturday night, Arsenal are European champions for the very first time.
