Arsenal's season could end in the worst way possible after promising so much.
We have spoken about this at length for the past couple of weeks regarding how precarious Arsenal's position is inside the top five was, and now, the reality we warned could happen is beginning to become a reality.
Arsenal's 2-1 loss to Bournemouth swung the door open for the Gunners' rivals to overtake them in the race for a Champions League spot next season.
With just three games left in the Premier League season, Arsenal is now just three points ahead of Manchester City in third, four points ahead of Newcastle (who Arsenal still have to play) and Chelsea in fourth, and seven points ahead of Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand.
So it could be four points that separates second from sixth, with the Gunners in freefall.
Yes, the Champions League second-leg against PSG is just around the corner, but the 1-0 defeat in the first leg at the Emirates, means Mikel Arteta's side has to go to Paris and win, just as it did in the second leg against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
That is a tall order.
Can Gunners stabilize to secure top-five finish?
Putting it bluntly, they simply have to.
If the Gunners miss out on the top five, yes it is a nightmare end to the season, but we also have to project forward and see the repercussions.
No Champions League next season is nightmare fuel, and it also means that the "big" signings the club was hoping to make, might now be on the back burner because European football was the big draw card.
What makes things worse is that in Arsenal's three remaining league games, Liverpool and Newcastle are on the schedule. Yuck.
So, after seemingly being in a strong position both in the top-five race and Champions League, it has taken all but a week for Arsenal to come crashing down to earth.
If they succumb to PSG, then it will be all hands on deck in the league, but given how tough two of its three fixtures are, the slide might be too far gone to stop.
Arsenal missing out on Champions League football seemed unfathomable two weeks ago.
Now, it's looking like the Gunners' reality unless they can find a way to halt this disastrous slide.
