Arsenal are said to be 'seriously considering' a summer transfer for Real Madrid's Rodrygo, with some reports suggesting the Brazilian wants to move on at the end of the season.

Andrea Berta is the man in charge of revolutionising Arsenal's attack off the back of a disappointing campaign which brought to light shortcomings in Mikel Arteta's frontline. The club simply didn't do enough in the previous two windows to set themselves up for success, and they have a lot of making up to do this summer.

While signing a long-term number nine is key, so is bolstering the flanks. Not only do Arsenal require superior cover than what Raheem Sterling supplied to Bukayo Saka this season, but there's also scope for them to upgrade their options down the left.

The club has been linked with an array of names, but the biggest of them all is Rodrygo, who's certainly on the Gunners' radar.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo is the statement signing Arsenal must target

Rodrygo has long been regarded as being on the cusp of superstardom without being a 'galactico' in his own right. He's an associative player who provides ample balance to Madrid's star-studded attack but is rarely thrust into the limelight himself.

Only once has the winger reached double-digit La Liga goals in a season, doing so in 2023/24, and he recorded 15 league goal contributions the campaign prior. Rodrygo's also been a consistent producer in the Champions League for a club synonymous with winning the competition, notching seven goal contributions in each of the previous four European campaigns.

Rodrygo's body of work at Madrid and the feeling that there's untapped potential within the Brazilian means supporters should be incredibly excited over the links. Florian Plettenberg reports that Arsenal have opened talks 'behind the scenes' but notes that any deal would be 'difficult' to pull off, even if the 24-year-old is seemingly willing to move on.

The finances involved would be mammoth, with Florentino Perez potentially demanding as much as £100m for a player who's contracted until 2028. Capology estimates Rodrygo to be making approximately £200,000 a week at Madrid, which wouldn't break Arsenal's wage structure, but any deal would take a large chunk away from their summer kitty, perhaps limiting their funds for a striker.

But, if you want to talk about "ambition" and "taking the next step", signing a player of Rodrygo's ilk is exactly the sort of move Arsenal should be making. He's an excellent combiner off the right and can cover Saka when needed, but the Brazilian wants to star on the opposite flank and the Emirates could be the place where the 24-year-old breaches the superstardom threshold.
