Arsenal set to make offer for Bruno Guimarães but they know their limit

Arsenal are set to make a £70million offer to sign Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle, according to Sami Mokbel of BBC Sport and other reports.

The Gunners have made the Brazil international a priority target and he is keen on joining them this summer as they look to bid for his services.

Mikel Arteta's side are ready to submit an offer in hopes of getting close to or meeting Newcastle's valuation, but reports suggest they know their limit and won't go too high.

Arsenal's interest in Guimarães was first revealed in June when the club had seen a verbal offer turned down through intermediaries with Newcastle showing no intent to sell that captain.

Since then though, the midfielder has expressed his desire to leave the Magpies and join the Premier League champions during the transfer window.

In recent days, reports surfaced that the Gunners were preparing to accelerate talks by contacting the Tyneside outfit directly to discuss a potential deal for the Brazil international and that now appears to have taken the next step forward.

Mokbel revealed that club-to-club talks are ongoing and have indeed sped up over the past few days, but it is currently uncertain if the impending offer by Arteta's side will meet the valuation set by Newcastle.

Arsenal's move for Guimarães comes amid a determination to build on and strengthen the squad that finally won the Premier League title last summer by bringing in more high quality players that can be relied on in moments that matter.

However, they are reported to hold a hardline maximum valuation of the Brazil international are unwilling to overpay for his services despite making him a priority target in their summer business.

That comes in similar fashion to their decision against signing Morgan Rogers, who moved to Chelsea for £117m two days ago. The Gunners had been the main club interested in signing the former Aston Villa star, but valued him at £80m and refused to go higher, turning down an opportunity to match the bid made by their London rivals.

This is an admirable approach from Arsenal considering Guimarães' current situation. The midfielder's contract expires in two years and with him set to turn 29-years-old in November, Arteta's side clearly do not want to run the risk of potentially overpaying for a player whose prime could be coming to an end in the not too distant future.

Fans will be hoping the Gunners can pull off the move, but if the offer does not meet Newcastle's valuation of Guimarães, it will be interesting to see how much higher Arsenal are willing to go before moving onto another target.
