Arsenal find themselves in a tricky spot with the striker position once again. It felt like it had been solved when they signed Viktor Gyokeres last summer, but this season, the Swedish international has really struggled.
Kai Havertz on the other hand, has looked much more comfortable, and it's fair to say that he's clearly won the battle to be Mikel Arteta's first choice striker. However, he recently suffered yet another injury while on international duty with Germany, adding to his previous problems over the last two years.
If Havertz can't stay fit and Gyokeres can't find form and could potentially leave, Arsenal need to consider signing another striker in the January transfer window. For one, he would add depth, and secondly, he would potentially replace Gyokeres entirely.
Arsenal have been linked with Maximilian Beier
The Gunners were linked with potentially signing Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez in the summer, but this didn't materialise, instead, they may need to view other targets, who could be more affordable, especially when it's tricky to complete deals in January.
According to Teamtalk, Arsenal are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund forward Maximilian Beier. The 23-year-old plays a very similar role to Havertz in that he is more of a number 10, but he can play as a nine and excels when he has talented playmakers around and behind him.
This season, Beier has been one of the first-choice forwards for the Bundesliga leaders, alongside Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri. The Gunners have kept an eye on Nwaneri, and in doing so have become keen on Beier. He's scored one goal and provided two assists in four Bundesliga games so far, and is fast becoming one of Dortmund's most exciting attacking stars.
However, Arsenal aren't alone in their interest in the 23-year-old, as the report also claims that both Tottenham and Man United are interested too. It means we could see somewhat of a bidding war for the German forward; however, out of the three, Arsenal can offer league titles and trophy success to Beier, which would hopefully be enough to sway him to choose the Emirates.
The great thing about Beier is that he is very versatile. Much like Havertz, he can play as a nine, as a number 10, and he can also play on either wing. Dortmund use him as a left-forward, as he plays a wider role alongside Nwaneri on the right, who both play behind a striker.
If he were to come to Arsenal, he could play behind Gyokeres or Havertz, or be the focal point as a nine. First step, though, Arsenal need to ensure that he doesn't attract too much attention from United and Spurs before January.
