Arsenal's search for that X-factor striker still rolls on. They were heavily linked with Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez in the summer, and he seems like the ideal fit. The Argentina international has extensive experience in the Premier League with Manchester City, so the transition would be seamless.
There's still a major question mark over Viktor Gyokeres, despite a decent first season last year. He scored 20 goals in all competitions in his first season at the Emirates. However, he's really struggled to start this season; he has made three appearances in all competitions and is yet to score a goal.
It seems Gyokeres' role this season is more of an understudy to Kai Havertz. With that in mind, there's no wonder that the Gunners remain interested in Alvarez, as he would provide an upgrade on both Gyokeres and Havertz.
Last season, Alvarez scored 20 goals and provided nine assists for Atletico, proving that he's not just a dynamic goalscorer but also a handy creator.
Arsenal could swap Noni Madueke for Julian Alvarez
After failing to sign Alvarez in the summer, Arsenal may have to start thinking of new ways to land the 26-year-old, and a swap deal is staring them in the face.
Earlier this week, reports claimed that Atletico Madrid were keeping tabs on winger Noni Madueke for a potential loan move in January. This comes as Madueke has become somewhat of a second thought for Mikel Arteta and isn't getting the minutes he wants, fueling rumours of an exit.
Seeing as there's mutual interest on both sides, Arsenal could try to work a swap deal which would see Madueke go to the Spanish capital, and Alvarez come to the Emirates. Considering that Alvarez's estimated market value sits at over £100m, and Madueke's around £40m-50m, the Gunners would have to add cash to make it a fair trade; however, it would make the Alvarez signing more financially viable.
Furthermore, from an Atletico point of view, the guarantee of a proven, talented attacker coming their way in part-exchange might be more tempting than simply a transfer fee, especially seeing as they reportedly have an interest in Madueke.
If the Gunners were able to pull off a deal for Alvarez, it would all but ruin Gyokeres' chances of becoming the go-to number nine; however, it would significantly improve Arteta's attack and give him a squad that's more than capable of winning both the Premier League and the Champions League. Alvarez could be that final piece.
