Arsenal are said to be pushing to tie down their next potential superstar talent as they continue building for the future. The Gunners are in a pivotal moment in many ways, having become one of the best teams in the world over the last couple of years.
The Gunners missed out on the Champions League in the season just gone, but their Premier League title was a key moment in this ever-growing project. Even with the defeat, you would find it tough to argue against Arsenal being the second or third best team in the world at this moment in time, with only PSG and Bayern Munich likely ahead of them.
But staying at the top is not an easy task. Arsenal must continue to fine-tune their starting team, but they must also look to the future, particularly if they ever want to get out of the cycle of spending hundreds of millions every year.
The next generation
Arsenal have a steady crop of youngsters coming through, and they have already benefited from Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, although it's unclear whether the latter will be kept around long-term.
Elsewhere, Max Dowman looks to be a potential generational talent, with huge excitement around his future, and there is another player with similar expectations behind him.
Winger Kyran Thompson is being dubbed the next best thing by many in tune with the academy setup, and Arsenal are said to be desperate to keep hold of him.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are currently working on a new contract for the 16-year-old winger who scored four and assisted three for the various youth teams he played for in the season just gone.
Romano posted on X: "Talks continue between Arsenal and England U17 winger Kyran Thompson over new deal. No agreement yet but talks remain ongoing ahead of the expiration of his current deal on 30 June. Arsenal are keen to secure the future of one of England’s most highly-rated young talents. Several clubs are monitoring the situation as they await the player’s decision."
Arsenal have repeatedly spent big over recent years, and the only way out of that trap, which is indeed a trap due to Financial Fair Play rules, is to develop a steady stream of young talent who either come through and play or leave on significant fees.
It's something Chelsea have mastered over the years, regularly pulling tens of millions per season through their often-criticised loan programme, Arsenal could do with mastering something similar.
