It has felt like an age, hasn't it? This seemingly never-ending international break is now, finally, almost over, with Arsenal returning to action against Leeds United on Saturday, back at the Emirates for the first time in 34 days.

Mikel Arteta's team did commence the campaign with seven successive victories across four competitions, before crashing back down to earth last time out, demolished 3-0 by Brighton. Thus, he will be demanding a reaction from his players, as they prepare for the first of nine matches in a hectic four week period.

Ahead of this Premier League clash, how have Arsenal fared in recent encounters with Leeds?

Since Leeds United returned to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa, Arsenal have very much had the better of this fixture. The Gunners have won each of their last eight meetings with Leeds, unbeaten in 16 encounters overall.

The Whites' most-recent win in this fixture came in May 2003, with Mark Viduka scoring late to snatch a 3-2 victory for Peter Reid's team at Highbury. Arsène Wenger's side would then not lose any of their next 49 Premier League matches, becoming the Invincibles 12 months later.

In more recent times, encounters with Leeds have been important to Arteta's team too. Arsenal's 2-1 victory in May 2022 was the first time Louis Dunford's song The Angel was played before kick off, which has subsequently become a staple of an Arsenal matchday.

On the pitch, Arteta's team demolished Daniel Farke's team twice last season, smashing Leeds 5-0 in North London and then 4-0 at Elland Road when the pair most-recently met. They were one of only two sides to complete the double over Leeds last season, Man City being the other.

In the former, Viktor Gyökeres marked his home debut with a second half double, before also firing home the third in West Yorkshire in January.

So, can the striker repeat that trick on Saturday lunchtime? Gyökeres has been on fire during the international break, scoring in all four of Sweden's matches, most-recently the only scorer against Romania at Arena Națională on Monday night.

With Kai Havertz having suffered a hamstring injury in Amsterdam, the Swede is set to be leading the line. So, will we see international Gyökeres, or the man who looked rather lost in Naples and Ipswich? Well, his recent record against Leeds, as well as Arsenal's ongoing winning streak in this fixture, should fill fans will confidence.
