Arsenal's chances of landing Nico Williams in 2025 have been boosted by Barcelona's decision to drop out of the race to sign the Spanish international.

We're closing in on the first transfer window of the new year, and while Williams isn't expected to leave in the winter, a move away from Athletic Club next summer is a real possibility.

The winger was the subject of plenty of transfer talk after he helped Spain to Euro 2024 glory in July, but a move to desired destination Barcelona never materialised.

It's taken a little while for Williams' 2024/25 season to get going having enjoyed such a euphoric summer, but he's started to come into his own in recent weeks. The 22-year-old has recorded seven goal contributions across 18 games in all competitions so far this term.

Given his meteoric rise and all the talk which surrounded his future in the summer, Williams has been included on The Athletic's Transfer Radar 2025.

The 22-year-old had his heart set on a move to Catalonia after teaming up with Lamine Yamal to great effect at the Euros, and while Barca were doubtlessly keen to bring in Williams having already signed Dani Olmo, the upsurge in Raphinha form renders the addition of the winger a non-priority in 2025.

The Athletic say Barca are currently 'not there' for Williams.

However, the electrifying winger will not be short of options next year. Multiple Premier League clubs boast a long-standing interest, including Arsenal. The Gunners will surely make further additions to their frontline next year, with a starting calibre left-winger and striker likely to be targeted. While Williams burst into life at the Euros, manifesting his very best, his form has generally been more inconsistent at club level but his potential is undeniable.

The player's £46m release clause remains active, but Williams' high wages at Athletic is a factor potential buyers must consider. While Arsenal would likely be able to afford the trigger the clause, whether the club would be willing to offer the 22-year-old such a lucrative contract is another matter.

Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are the other clubs noted by The Athletic as boasting an interest.

For the time being, though, let's not get all caught up in transfer talk, eh? There's plenty of Arsenal to enjoy and roast potatoes to eat before the winter window rolls around.
