Reiss Nelson was left on the bench as his Brentford side lost 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. He has so far only been used as a substitute in two of the Bees' Premier League games this season. In total, he has been on the field of play for just 16 minutes across both matches.
Nelson did miss games through illness earlier in the season. He has also featured in both of Brentford's EFL Cup matches this season. The winger even got a goal and an assist in a 5-0 win over Grimsby Town. Grimsby may be a League Two side, but they did knock Manchester United out of the competition.
Nevertheless, it can be said with certainty that Brentford, much like Arsenal, is struggling to offer him game time. This is why he was sent out on loan originally, but he's now stuck between a rock and a hard place.
His parent club, Arsenal, is now challenging for the Premier League title. It is no surprise that if Nelson is not getting into Brentford's team, then he stands no chance of playing for Arsenal. The Gunners now have Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli ahead of Nelson in the left-wing position.
Arsenal's academy has earned a lot of credit in recent years, with the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman coming through. These teenagers are getting minutes in the Premier League this season already.
Does Reiss Nelson need to depart the Premier League?
Nelson was once the bright spark from the Gunners' academy. He had loans with Feyenoord and Hoffenheim to help his development early on in his career. On the back of these spells, he earned himself game time for Arsenal.
Last season, Nelson was sent on loan to Fulham, for whom he made 11 Premier League appearances. The winger scored against Newcastle United and got an assist against Manchester City. He also found the back of the net for the Cottagers in the EFL Cup against Preston North End.
Unfortunately, Nelson's spell with Fulham was cut short due to a hamstring injury. He does not appear to be the same player since the injury, as he is not playing for Brentford. Nelson may need to take a step backward to go forward. This could be by joining a club outside of the Premier League.
Nelson flourished in the Bundesliga and the Eredivisie early on in his career. Going abroad could be a fantastic option for him again. The player was linked with Besiktas earlier this year, so the Turkish Super Lig might be the place for Nelson to start rebuilding his career. German clubs have also been interested in Nelson in the past, so the Bundesliga could still be an option.
