With the Premier League on hiatus due to the elongated international break, now is the perfect time to pay closer attention to the WSL, with the biggest fixture on the women's football calendar taking centre stage in Sunday's prime time slot.

Manchester City may be the Women's Super League champions and current leaders, but Arsenal vs Chelsea is the division's leading rivalry. Prior to last season, Chelsea won six WSL titles in a row, dominant against their rivals, and pretty much everyone else, before Arsenal flipped that script last season. So, ahead of this huge clash at Stamford Bridge, who should be favourites?

Arsenal certainly had the better of this fixture last season. The Gunners eliminated the Blues from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage when the pair most recently met. Renée Slegers' side were 3-1 winners at the Emirates, before a backs against the wall display at Stamford Bridge a week later, beaten 1-0 courtesy of a late goal, but holding on to progress.

Even before that, Slegers' side claimed a very rare victory at the Bridge back in January, beating Sonia Bompastor's team 2-0 on the King's Road; Beth Mead and Mariona Caldentey the scorers. This was the Gunners' first-ever WSL win at Stamford Bridge, seeking another on Sunday.

For many years, Chelsea, particularly during the Emma Hayes era, inflected countless painful moments on Gooners everywhere. Fixtures with their London rivals did produce joy at times though too. A recent example of this is the 2024 League Cup Final at Molineux. The game was goalless going into extra time and, just as a penalty shootout seemed inevitable, Stina Blackstenius popped up to snatch victory for then Jonas Eidevall's team.

This actually saw Arsenal retain the Conti Cup, having also won 3-1 against the same opponents at Selhurst a year earlier. So, looking to the future, can the Gunners claim three precious points at the Bridge on Sunday to catapult themselves back into the WSL title race?

Well, a win over Chelsea does not feel quite as impossible as it once was.
