Cristhian Mosquera has been Arsenal's most surprising player of the season so far.
The Spaniard, who signed from Valencia in the summer transfer window, would not have expected to be given the chances he's been given this season.
After a remarkable performance against Liverpool before the international break, the center back was given a nod of trust in the starting lineup against Nottingham Forest today. And continuing his great form, Mosquera was easily one of the best players on the pitch.
A few important defensive contributions showed that Mosquera has a Saliba level of composure. Nottingham Forest's attack could have been much more potent if it weren't for Mosquera cleaning things up for the Gunners.
And it's wild to think that Mosquera is just 21 years old, FOUR years younger than Jakub Kiwior.
Cristhian Mosquera is doing what Jakub Kiwior could never
Jakub Kiwior is still good in his own right, but we can't help but notice that Mosquera is easily better than him, despite being almost half a decade younger.
Mosquera is a safe bet in the Arsenal lineup. Arsenal fans already feel comfortable and reassured whenever he plays, which is more than what could be said for Kiwior.
Kiwior has improved leaps and bounds from when he first played for Arsenal, but he isn't the end product yet. Mosquera will inevitably improve, but he's started much better than Kiwior finished at Arsenal.
Thinking back to when Kiwior was trusted to replace William Saliba in the starting lineup, it wasn't nearly as successful as how Mosquera has replaced Saliba. Heck, Kiwior could even be said to have cost Arsenal the title that season.
Arsenal fans will be excited to see Saliba back in the lineup, but Mosquera will be hot on his tail. And this is exactly what Mikel Arteta would want: new faces challenging old faces. There's nothing like healthy competition.
But, yeah, if there was any lasting hope that Jakub Kiwior would return from loan and become a real hitter for Arsenal, that hope has drastically decreased now.
Let's not forget about Piero HincapiƩ, who is yet to make his Arsenal debut.
