What Cristiano Ronaldo said about Arsenal feels like a gut punch

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players to ever exist. Some would argue he is the best, but that debate was put to bed when Lionel Messi won the World Cup last time out.

Regardless, Arsenal fans know more about Ronaldo than they do about Messi. Although Messi had his fun with Arsenal, Ronaldo was a more frequent opponent for the Gunners.

And we can all remember that free-kick Ronaldo scored against Arsenal, from an impossible distance. That has to be one of the most underrated goals in history.

But Ronaldo will hardly remember it. He is probably the best goal scorer the sport has ever seen, and one of the finest athletes to grace their respective sports.

Cristiano Ronaldo reminded Arsenal fans of a very harsh fact

What could've been, eh? Cristiano Ronaldo was close to joining Arsenal, this we all know. Now, he's stirred the pot yet again by reminding Arsenal fans of that bitter pill to swallow.

In his own words, when speaking to English journalist Piers Morgan, Cristiano Ronaldo said: “It’s true story. I was close to joining Arsenal many years ago… but it’s the past. Honestly, when I look at Arsenal, I'm always looking at them not like a rival. I like the team, I like them!”

Way to rub it in, Cristiano.

If you ask any Arsenal fan, they would've given anything to see Cristiano Ronaldo playing for Arsenal in his prime. If they don't say that, they don't support Arsenal.

Ronaldo spent his prime years at Real Madrid, but that's not to take anything away from his Man United playing days (the first time round, anyway). He is one of the Premier League's unsung heroes, and it might have been at Arsenal.

Look, this is a tale as old as time. Every Arsenal fan knows about the players they could've signed: Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Kylian Mbappé are just a few of them.

To imagine Ronaldo in an Arsenal shirt might seem weird these days. However, he would have changed the trajectory of the club. In this reality, he would have signed after the Invincibles period, and he would have stirred Arsenal to the heights they deserved when first moving to the Emirates Stadium.

In some esteemed company, alongside the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie, it would have been some Arsenal team. We would say that they would've surely lifted silverware with CR7, but that's a claim too bold to make given that period of time.
