Arsenal superstar Declan Rice gave manager Mikel Arteta a lot of credit for improving him as a player during his time at the club so far.
When Rice arrived at Arsenal, he was easily one of the best midfielders in England. Fast forward a few years, he is now one of the very best midfielders in world football, and a huge reason why Arsenal have just won the Premier League title.
They fell just short of winning the Champions League, but with a squad that is as young as this, more opportunities will come their way to make things right.
Rice has been a big part of everything they have achieved, and when asked about the coach and how he has helped him, the Englishman definitely was not shying away from giving credit where credit is due.
Declan Rice painted the clearest picture of how much Mikel Arteta helps his players
He said: “He's just turned me into a more [all-round] midfielder, in terms of someone who can do a little bit of everything.
"I heard Steven Gerrard talk about when he played, he [saw] himself as a midfielder that could do a little bit of everything. I kind of say the same. I can do a little bit of attack, a little bit of defending.
“If I need to stay and help the defence, I can. If I need to push forward [and] help the attack, I can.
I want to be busy but show my character, my strengths, and I think [Arteta] has really helped me do that over the last few years.”
He is not comparing himself to the quality of Steven Gerrard - not yet, anyway - but the role is the same, to an extent. He is now doing a bit of everything. When you compare it to the way he used to play, more as a defensive midfielder than anything else at West Ham, you see the amount of added variety there is to Rice now.
He creates a lot of danger in the final third. He defends a lot. He passes the ball around well. He wins his duels. There isn't much that Rice is not capable of doing, and a lot of it is down to him as a player, but some of it is also due to the ways in which Arteta has developed him into one of the very best in the business.
Rice is just about to enter his prime years as a football player, and it will be interesting to see how he improves on a few things in the next couple of years. Not sure if there are that many things to improve on, but Arteta will surely find a way, and Rice will make it happen.
