Ethan Nwaneri's loan move just went from bad to pointless

It has not worked out for Ethan Nwaneri at Olympique de Marseille.

Joining Olympique de Marseille on loan appeared to be a good opportunity for Ethan Nwaneri to gain experience at a big European club. However, the 19-year-old's stint at the club has not gone to plan.

Nwaneri burst onto the scene at Arsenal when he broke the record for being the youngest ever Premier League player at the age of just 15 and 181 days. He has since gone on to play 34 times in the league for the Gunners, scoring four goals and providing two assists.

During the first half of the season, Nwaneri made just six Premier League appearances before being sent to Marseille in January. His stint at the French side started well as he scored on his Ligue 1 debut, a 3-1 win over Lens.

Since then, Nwaneri has only had two more Ligue 1 goal involvements in nine matches. He set up former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's late winner against Olympique Lyonnais. Then Nwaneri scored in a 2-1 defeat to Lille. Most of Nwaneri's Ligue 1 appearances have come as a substitute, and he has been left on the bench on four occasions. This included their 1-1 draw with Nice at the weekend.

It was a mistake to send Ethan Nwaneri on loan to Marseille

Over the weekend, it was claimed that Habib Beye decided to drop Nwaneri from the starting line-up. Despite injuries to attackers, he was benched. Beye hinted at weak training. Quizzed on his absence, Beye said, “He’s a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment. Other players gave way more.“

Beye was not the manager who signed Nwaneri; that was Roberto De Zerbi, who is now in charge of Arsenal's North London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.

Given that Nwaneri has been used so little by Marseille, it may have been better for him to stay at Arsenal and be around the first team as they challenge for the title. It may also have been better for him to join a team lower down the Premier League table. He was linked with Bournemouth in January as well, which could have been a good fit for the young player.

There is no option for Marseille to sign Nwaneri permanently. Given the lack of game time, he is currently getting at the Ligue 1 side, so it would not be likely that they would take up the option if they had one anyway.
