Gabriel Martinelli is at a crossroads in his Arsenal career. Despite showing great signs of life a few seasons ago, he is ageing like bread rather than ageing like wine.
The Brazilian international is getting worse the more time passes. This isn't harsh to say anymore; we can no longer fall back on the age-old 'he's only young, he will improve.' The truth is that Martinelli is getting no younger, and frankly, he's getting no better either.
Over the summer, Arsenal signed Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze. Not to mention, they also signed star center forward Viktor Gyökeres. All three of those attacking players are bound to throw curveballs into the everyday attacking proceedings at Arsenal.
It's even getting to the point where some fans would argue there's no excuse to start Martinelli anymore.
Gabriel Martinelli is too comfortable to leave Arsenal
But why hasn't Gabriel Martinelli even considered leaving yet?
The answer is comfort. He's comfortable at Arsenal, and this was confirmed by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
In a recent YouTube video, Fabrizio Romano explained that Gabriel Martinelli to Bayern Munich is a move that could have happened in the summer transfer window, but didn't.
Romano said that Gabriel Martinelli was in talks with Bayern Munich and the talks were positive. However, due to financial reasons, Bayern didn't make the move.
It's also said by Romano that Gabriel Martinelli felt comfortable at Arsenal and, similarly, Arsenal showed no desire to let go of him.
At face value, you might think it's good that Martinelli is comfortable at Arsenal, but when you really question why he's comfortable and the conditions that must be in place for him to be comfortable, it is rather frustrating that Arsenal would even let it happen for so long.
Of course Martinelli was comfortable; nobody was challenging him for a spot in the Arsenal team. If he had a bad performance, he wasn't going to get dropped easily. He could basically get away with ghosting each game.
Anyway, that was until the summer transfer window. Arsenal actively recruited in positions that will harm Gabriel Martinelli. There's a growing feeling that his reality check is right around the corner.
And look, we would love for Martinelli to pass that reality check with flying colors. If he proves us wrong and comes out of the competition a better player, then great, everybody wins.
But we need to see a far hungrier Martinelli than the comfortable Martinelli we've been seeing over the last few years.
