Gabriel Jesus was meant to replace Sergio Agüero at Manchester City. He may not have lived up to expectations, but he now has the same number of Premier League trophies as the Argentine.
Manchester City could only draw with AFC Bournemouth last night, which meant that the Gunners were crowned champions. Jesus only played a bit-part role this campaign. He missed a large chunk of the first half of the campaign when he was recovering from a cruciate ligament tear.
He had suffered that injury mid-way through last season, which was a miss for Arsenal, as Kai Havertz was also injured. Mikel Arteta needed to bring in a new striker, and Viktor Gyökeres was recruited from Sporting CP.
Gyokeres was never going to be as prolific as he was in Portugal. However, he still managed to score 14 Premier League goals in 35 games this season. Jesus managed just two in 13 games, and both came in convincing victories. Havertz also managed just two league goals this season, one of which was the winner against Burnley in Arsenal's last game.
What does the future hold for Gabriel Jesus?
Jesus' future at Arsenal is uncertain as he is entering the final year of his contract. The Gunners will look to build on their Premier League victory by strengthening their side further. This could be achieved by bringing in another striker, which would push Jesus further down the pecking order.
The forward has been linked with the Saudi Pro League as well as a return to Brazilian club soccer. However, at 29, Jesus should have more to offer in European soccer. Recently, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid have shown interest in Jesus.
When Agüero left City, he went to Barcelona, but played just five times for the La Liga side before his career was cut short as he had a heart problem. Jesus may have matched Agüero for Premier League titles. However, he has not lived up to Agüero in terms of goals.
Agüero scored 184 Premier League goals in 275 Premier League games. Jesus found the back of the net just 58 times in 159 matches for City in the division. He then scored a further 20 goals in 84 league games for the Gunners.
Arsenal have recruited well from City. Not just Jesus, but Mikel Arteta returned to Arsenal after working as Pep Guardiola's assistant at City. Arteta has finally got one over his old master by winning the Premier League.
