Gabriel Martinelli helped Arsenal salvage a 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday evening with a headed goal to bring his side back into the game after going two down. His strike at Anfield saw him extend the prolific record he boasts against the Reds.

The Brazilian has enjoyed his meetings with the 20-time league champions since first coming to England in 2019 and has now scored six goals and provided two assists against them. Martinelli has been noted for his ability to cause problems for Trent Alexander-Arnold when they meet and that is clear in his record against the Merseyside club.

Having now scored against Liverpool in three consecutive seasons, his efforts have helped the Gunners forge an impressive unbeaten record over their northern counterparts. Martinelli certainly does love to play against the Reds.

A young and raw Martinelli, still fresh out of the Brazilian fourth division, first came up against Liverpool in a Carabao Cup fourth round tie at Anfield in October 2019. The then-striker stole the headlines as he scored a brace in a thrilling 5-5 draw on Merseyside. He netted his penalty in the resulting shootout, but Arsenal were knocked out of the competition.

Martinelli's impressive display earned praise from Jurgen Klopp, who labelled him a "talent of the century" and "an incredible striker." The German boss continued to be a fan of the Gunners' star winger into his final years as Liverpool boss.

With his side top of the league in what is to date his best season in an Arsenal shirt, Martinelli played a crucial part in a 3-2 win early on in the 2022-23 campaign. He put his team ahead inside the first minute with a great run and finish from the left side of the box. He assisted Bukayo Saka for their side's second late in the first half.

He gave the Gunners another perfect start in the return fixture when he latched onto a loose ball from the Liverpool defence before poking an effort past Alisson. Martinelli went from scorer to provider once again with a well-placed cross onto the head of Gabriel Jesus to make it two. Arsenal couldn't maintain the lead however, and eventually allowed the Reds to claw back and draw 2-2.

After failing to make an impact in a 1-1 draw at Anfield in December 2023, Martinelli had found his shooting boots to once again cause Liverpool problems in the return fixture at the Emirates Stadium. His pressure on Virgil van Dijk prompted the centre back to get mixed up with his goalkeeper, allowing Martinelli to pounce on a bounced ball and roll it into an empty net to put Arsenal 2-1 up, before going onto add another in stoppage time.

Returning to Merseyside for the Gunners' latest encounter with Liverpool, Martinelli once again had an impact on the game. With his side 2-0 down, the Brazilian shifted to a central attacking role and that paid off almost instantly after half-time. He rose well to a Leandro Trossard cross to flick a deft header past Alisson and pull his team back into the game. Arsenal managed to grab another and snatch a point with a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

It does seem to be that regardless of his form, Martinelli loves playing against Liverpool and can always have an impact in one way or another. He now has eight goal involvements against the Reds, his best record against any team as an Arsenal player.
