Gary Neville pointed out Arsenal's lack of goalscoring threat in their 2-1 defeat to Manchester City to turn the title race on its head on Sunday evening.

Arsenal had a comfortable nine-point cushion at the top of the Premier League table just a few weeks ago, but careless results in many games have now made that a three-point difference, with Manchester City still having a game in hand over their title rivals.

On Sunday, Arsenal played relatively well, but failed to score many of the chances they created, resulting in a loss. In big games like this, these things matter a lot more than in other games.

Even though Arsenal had a higher xG than Manchester City, they failed to capitalise on it and gain any points from the most important game of their season.

Neville was talking about the result on Sky Sports, saying: "That Havertz chance felt like a massive moment in Arsenal's season.

"They weren't ruthless today because I think the performance was there. That is as good you will see team come play at Manchester City.

"However, they have missed three or four big chances. This one with Donnarumma comes out. Eze has won off the post. You then got Gabriel header. Then you've got the Havertz's' header.

"If you said you are going get four chances against Man City here you'd say you have to take one of them. And they've not been ruthless in taking it."

Arsenal fans have their problems with Neville, because of their history and playing for Manchester United, but the former footballer is absolutely bang on here.

There were so many chances in that game against Manchester City where Arsenal looked as close as they ever have been to scoring against their title rivals, but they were not ruthless enough.

It begs the question as always: why does this happen every time? Last season, their reason was that they did not have a pure goalscorer to lead the title run-in for a long enough period to win the league.

Well, Arsenal spent a lot of money on signing a few offense-heavy players, but they just were not able to capitalise on their arrival.

Viktor Gyokeres has scored a bunch of goals, but not nearly enough. Eze has had trouble finding the net, as has Noni Madueke. Arsenal's requirement for a goalscorer does not hurt them in most games, as they are usually able to get the job done.

But, when it matters most, that is when the Gunners are just not ruthless enough, and fans have seen that time after time for the last few years.

Arsenal can still win the league, but they have made it a lot tougher than it had to be, and there is no one else at fault here.
