Granit Xhaka isn't the only former Arsenal player in impeccable form right now

Arsenal are currently top of the Premier League, but may still be wishing they had these players on their roster.

Soon after moving to the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal sold many of their top players in order to fund their new ground. Other players left as they were more likely to win trophies elsewhere. Thierry Henry joined Barcelona, whilst a host of players, including Samir Nasri and Emanuel Adebayor, signed for Manchester City.

Now the Gunners are less of a selling club and can keep hold of their most talented players. This has led to Mikel Arteta's side now becoming title challengers. Whilst team unity is crucial to Arteta's roster, a few ex-Gunners are now starring elsewhere.

3 Arsenal players that are in great form right now

Granit Xhaka - Sunderland

Arsenal dropped points in the Premier League last weekend as they drew 2-2 with Sunderland. The man captaining Sunderland was their former midfielder, Granit Xhaka. The Swiss international has been key to the Black Cats' impressive start to their first season back in the Premier League.

Sunderland are currently fourth, which is unprecedented for a club that has just come up from the Championship. Xhaka also impressed in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen before heading back to the Premier League.

Xhaka was Arsenal's captain, but was booed off after being substituted in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace back in 2019. The Gunners' then manager, Unai Emery, soon took the armband off him, and Xhaka eventually departed in 2023.

He joined Leverkusen, where he was a key part of Xabi Alonso's side. With the German team, he won the Bundesliga and got to the Europa League final.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - Marseille

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang replaced Xhaka as Arsenal captain, but also lost it under acrimonious circumstances. He was once an Arsenal star and was a key part of the side that won the FA Cup in 2020. This and along with two Community Shields, is the only silverware that Arteta has so far won as Arsenal manager.

Due to disciplinary issues, Aubameyang was dropped for a Premier League game with Southampton. He then lost the captaincy and left Arsenal for Barcelona in 2022 before returning to the Premier League with Chelsea.

Since leaving the Blues, Aubameyang has been at Marseille, barring a season in the Saudi Pro League with Al Qadsiah. This season for Marseille, the striker has scored four goals with three assists in 10 Ligue 1 games. He has also been starring in the Champions League, with one goal and three assists in just four games.

Serge Gnabry - Bayern Munich

Serge Gnabry came through Arsenal's academy, but made just 18 appearances for the first team. He was even sent on loan by the Gunners to West Bromwich Albion, but also failed to make his mark.

Gnabry returned to his home country of Germany with Werder Bremen in 2016. After just one season with Bremen, he was picked up by Bayern Munich, where he has won the Champions League and the Bundesliga six times.

This season, Gnabry has scored four goals with one assist in nine Bundesliga games. It is therefore surprising that he did not make the grade at Arsenal, especially under the tutelage of Arsène Wenger.
