Arsenal just faced Atlético Madrid - If that comes as news to you, how's that rock you're living under?
Arsenal fans are overjoyous right now, and for good reason. They just banged four goals past one of the best, and most stubborn defensive outfits in the world. To score four goals against a Diego Simeone side, being at your best is the bare minimum.
Arsenal's clean sheet is arguably more impressive than scoring four goals, though. Of course, the center backs and goalkeeper are largely to thank for that, but let's not look past the midfielders and full backs.
Mikel Arteta opted for a pretty unchanged defense, other than Myles Lewis-Skelly coming in. This shows that, despite Riccardo Calafiori being one of Arsenal's most important players, there is still an opportunity for Lewis-Skelly.
Mikel Arteta gives Myles Lewis-Skelly an Arsenal chance, not Ben White
Ben White, though, was forced to make do with around 10 minutes all-in, after coming off the bench in the 83rd minute. White started the last Champions League game against Olympiacos, so he would have hoped to get in the team yet again tonight.
He didn't, though, and instead, Jurrien Timber continued his impressive form.
It was a quick start for Timber, which White wouldn't have liked to see. Timber played like a brick wall with three defensive contributions and an additional four duels won. It is clear as day who is the preferred right-back under Mikel Arteta, and it's not Ben White.
Look, White is not a natural right-back. He was forced to slot into that position, and make it his own. However, it's been proven time and time again that if you become even slightly complacent under Mikel Arteta, then past commitments mean nothing.
Arteta has forced many names out of the starting lineup, including (but not limited to) Mesut Özil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Fan sentimentality means nothing, therefore.
If Ben White wants to reclaim his spot in the Arsenal lineup, he faces an uphill battle. Jurrien Timber is one of the best full-backs in the world, and William Saliba and Gabriel, who play in White's original position, are easily the best center back pairing on the globe.
It's not nice to say this, but Ben White probably won't get a run of starts this season, unless Jurrien Timber becomes injured.
