Jurrien Timber had yet another all-timer performance for Arsenal against Newcastle at the weekend. The full-back was here, there, and everywhere. Arsenal got the win for many reasons, but he was one of the biggest.
And it really came as no surprise. A big reason why he's started every game this season is due to how reliable he is. Whenever he's fit, he's the go-to full-back for Arsenal.
Last season, it could be argued that he was overused by Mikel Arteta in Ben White's absence. Therefore, there's always a bit of hesitation to use him, but the way things are going right now, he won't ever be dropped.
Jurrien Timber has left one Ben White in the dust this season
Ben White played for Arsenal against Port Vale in the Carabao Cup in midweek, and in turn, he wasn't used for the Gunners against Newcastle this weekend.
This is pretty telling of how Mikel Arteta plans to use White this season - in meaningless cup games or as a sub late on in games.
Ben White's fall to the bottom of the defensive pile needs to be studied. Once seen as a non-negotiable starter in this Arsenal team, injuries began to pile up, and now he is very rarely in contention in North London.
Of course, Ben White does have versatility working in his favor. This would be great at any club but Arsenal. Pretty much all of Arsenal's full-backs can play on either side of the defense or as center-backs. So, that trump card won't work for him either.
Look, Arsenal fans don't want Ben White to disappear into the ether. It would be much better if he could stick around and fight for his place. Perhaps there will be opportunities to do that when squad rotation is necessary, but he is now facing an uphill battle with Timber in his spot.
It's important to mention that with Ben White seemingly in contention to play for England again, he won't be able to do that without a run of fixtures under his belt. Thomas Tuchel will be eagerly monitoring his Arsenal playing minutes, and if Jurrien Timber continues to push him to the bench, White won't be making the trip to the USA.
