England got their World Cup campaign off to the perfect start with a 4-2 victory over Croatia in what was arguably their toughest group-stage fixture on paper. Goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford secured all three points and put Thomas Tuchel's side in a strong early position.
The Arsenal contingent in the Three Lions squad also played a key role in the win. Noni Madueke won the penalty that led to England's opening goal, while Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice both provided assists, helping to create the second and fourth goals respectively. Not a bad evening to be an Arsenal fan.
Thomas Tuchel was pleased with England's second-half display but expressed frustration with their performance before the break, believing their poor defensive shape was responsible for the two goals they conceded.
Attention now turns to England's next fixture against Ghana on 23 June, where Tuchel's side will be aiming to build on their opening victory and take firm control of Group L as they look to top that top the group for a potentially easier route through the knockout stages.
Declan Rice injury
There was concern among England supporters when the Arsenal midfielder was substituted in the 72nd minute, shortly after the hydration break, and was seen limping towards the bench with a frustrated expression. Revealed after the match, he was pointing to his lower back and hamstring as he walked over.
It was an unusual change from Thomas Tuchel, who opted to leave both Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers on the pitch in advanced roles, particularly given the lack of naturally defensive-minded midfielders in the squad. However, that move worked before being quickly resolved as England did not concede another goal and offered Croatia limited chances in the second half.
However, Tuchel offered both England and Arsenal fans reason for optimism when asked about the midfielder's condition after the game.
"“It was a moment to protect him. I hope it’s nothing more. Declan reassured me at the end it’s good. It’s nothing big to worry about.”"Tuchel speaking about Rice
The exact nature of Rice's discomfort is yet to be confirmed, and neither England nor the player provided any further details after the match. Rice also avoided discussing the issue during his post-match media duties, but looked happy as he got to sing the karaoke classic "Wonderwall" with the England fans at the end of the game.
Those comments suggest the substitution was largely precautionary, with no immediate concerns over Rice's availability for the remainder of the tournament. Rice, along with Saka and Madueke, will be bringing it home.
