Jorginho has entered the final six months of his Arsenal contract but the veteran midfielder could leave the club before the January transfer deadline.
The Gunners pivoted to the Chelsea midfielder two winters ago after failing to prise Moises Caicedo away from Brighton, with the Blues handing the Italian to their London rivals for a cut-price fee.
While few were inspired by the signing at the time, Jorginho has proven to be a useful addition during his two years at the club. Starts have been sporadic, but the Italian has been a key voice in the Arsenal dressing room and is doubtlessly venerated by the manager.
The club extended Jorginho's contract by a further year last May and may well offer the Italian a similar deal before the end of the season. However, the player's agent has been proactive in his search to find a new club for his client and a departure seems likely in 2025.
Report: Jorginho's agent targeting move away in January transfer window
Jorginho, though, may not have to wait until the summer to enjoy his next challenge. Some have suggested the 33-year-old wants to leave Arsenal before the expiry of his contract in June.
ESPN report that Jorginho's representatives have held 'exploratory talks' with Brazilian giants Palmeiras over a potential move. Agent Joao Santos has spoken with potential buyers/next destinations but his meeting with Palmeiras is understood to have concluded without a formal offer being discussed.
While Jorginho has racked up 820 minutes of football across all compettions this season, Arsenal would be foolish to let him go this month - even if it means they won't lose him for nothing in the summer. Selling the Italian merely opens up another position of need when there are distinct transfer priorities in attack.
Thomas Partey also risks leaving on a Bosman in the summer, with Arteta insistent that talks with both players will be held later on in the season.
Jorginho's recent performances, especially in the 1-1 draw with Brighton, points towards a player who is doubtlessly heading towards the twilight of his career. He has expressed a desire to return to Italy before retiring, and I can envisage Serie A clubs taking a keen interest in the free agent. However, the typical retirement homes of the Middle East and MLS are other alternatives for Jorginho assuming he exits the Gunners in 2025.
