Liverpool vs Arsenal match preview
Just when it felt as though Arsenal had turned a corner, well we are right back where we started. Last Sunday, after falling behind, the Gunners required a late Alessia Russo equaliser to salvage a draw against Aston Villa at the Emirates. Their wait for a first home WSL win this season goes on, becoming the first team in the competition's history to draw four successive home matches.
Before this, the pressure on Renée Slegers had somewhat eased. Arsenal fought back from a goal down to beat Tottenham in the North London derby, ending their five-match winless WSL streak, before hammering Benfica in Borehamwood in the Champions League. Now though, rumours around Slegers' future are swirling once again, so she and her team badly require a win on Merseyside.
As for Liverpool, given Arsenal's form, they will fancy their chances of an upset. Although, after a bright start to the campaign, winning two of their first four, Gareth Taylor's team have really struggled in recent weeks. Last Sunday, the Reds' were demolished 4-1 by West Ham in East London; Vivien Endemann's late goal scant consolation.
This means that Liverpool are without a win in four, thereby sinking down to 11th. Having said that, Taylor's team are yet to tase defeat at home this season, memorably beating Everton in the Merseyside derby, before a commendable 2-2 draw with London City Lionesses in St Helens a fortnight ago. Thus, there is no guarantee that Arsenal will leave Anfield with all three points.
Liverpool team news
Lily Woodham, Ceri Holland, Anna Jøsendal, Sophie Román Haug and Aurélie Csillag are all currently sidelined. Meantime, after a drubbing last weekend, will Gareth Taylor ring the changes, with scorer and star attacker Vivien Endemann almost guaranteed to start this time?
Arsenal team news
Renée Slegers is missing star midfielder Mariona Caldentey due to injury, while Selina Cerci and Chloe Kelly are also absent. Taylor Hinds will be hoping for a fourth successive start at left-back, against her former club, albeit she and Géraldine Reuteler were hooked at half time last Sunday.
The replacements Emily Fox and Lisa Baum, as well as Kim Little, Stina Blackstenius and Lotte Wubben-Moy could all return to the lineup; Slegers has options.
Predicted Line-ups
- Liverpool predicted lineup: Keating; Kerr, Clark, Fisk, Bernabé; Nagano, Ramos, Kapocs, Bergström, Olsen; Endemann.
- Arsenal predicted lineup: Rodríguez; Fox, Williamson, Wubben-Moy, Hinds; Little, Stanway; Smith, Baum; Russo, Blackstenius.
- Score prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Arsenal.
