Marli Salmon set to stay at Arsenal as transfer decision made

Marli Salmon is set to stay at Arsenal until at least January, according to James McNicholas of The Athletic.

The youngster looks like he will be remaining with the Gunners with the club eager to keep hold of him at London Colney until the winter transfer window.

Having been in and around the first team last term and throughout this year's pre-season campaign, Salmon could be set for a breakthrough under Mikel Arteta, but there is still potential for things to change.

Salmon is still only 16-years-old and is not currently eligible for a loan move, but turns 17 in the final week of the summer transfer window, which could open up the possibility for a temporary departure from North London.

At this current time however, Arsenal intend to keep hold of him until at least January, allowing him more valuable time around the first team. There is potential for him to become a crucial asset to Arteta too as he may be useful as cover for William Saliba, who is expected to be absent for a lengthy period with a back injury.

Christian Nørgaard stepped in at centre back on occasion last season, but his move to Everton could have opened up a clearer pathway for Salmon to offer his services in defence in the upcoming campaign.

There is still a chance the Gunners' stance on the Hale End star could change however. Arteta is keen on bringing an experienced defender to the Emirates Stadium in the final weeks of the window, with Ezri Konsa among the targets, and if a deal materialises, Salmon could be allowed to leave.

For now though, the defender looks set to remain at Arsenal which will see him build on the experience he gained during last season's Premier League-winning campaign.

Salmon made four first team appearances throughout the 2025/26 season, starting one game in the FA Cup and coming off the bench in the Champions League. He also featured among the substitutes in several games across all competitions, including three times in the Premier League, and his involvement has continued throughout pre-season.

It does seem smart for the Gunners to keep hold of Salmon for the time being. He will gain further valuable experience and has shown he can step in if needed. A January loan move could then be a great chance for him to play regularly at a lower level.
