Former Arsenal player Martin Keown said superstar defender Gabriel Magalhaes has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of after the Champions League final on Saturday.
Gabriel had a great match, but ultimately missed the deciding penalty, which meant Paris Saint Germain were the winners of the Champions League for the second consecutive time.
He was visibly gutted, and even though multiple Arsenal players came to his support after the conclusion of the shootout, it just would not have made it better for the Brazilian.
Gabriel would not sleep well tonight, but his performance overall was admirable, and there is no denying that.
Martin Keown just hit the nail on the head about Gabriel in the Champions League final
Speaking on what Gabriel means to Arsenal as well as his feelings about the player, Kewon said only good things.
He said: “He's my favourite Arsenal player. I've watched him all season and I take a lot of joy from it. He doesn't have to be ashamed about anything that he's done tonight.
“He had the bottle to go out there and take it. OK, he missed it but he was magnificent during the game. A real leader for Arsenal.
Keown is absolutely spot on. All great players miss penalties. Even the greatest players to have ever played the game, the Lionel Messis and Cristiano Ronaldos and even the newer generation of Kylian Mbappe and other big talents, have been in this situation before and missed penalties. It is bad luck, of course, but it is also a part of the game.
These sorts of things happen, and they make every single player stronger than they were before they took it. Besides, Gabriel had a fantastic game. There were times where absolutely nothing would get past this rock solid Arsenal defense, and a lot of that had to do with how Gabriel played on the night.
He did not put a foot wrong throughout the 120 minutes, and yes, the defeat will sting for a little bit, but the best players always bounce back stronger, and Gabriel is one of them.
Keown knows that, and was very well aware of the leadership that the Brazilian provides to this young Arsenal squad as well. It is not just the football that makes him one of the best in the business - it is his mentality.
Taking the fifth penalty is not the easiest thing to do in football, but Gabriel stepped up as a leader to do so, which matters so much more than people realise.
Keown's hit the nail on the head with this one.
