Former Ballon d'Or winner and English football legend Michael Owen feels like Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has a lot of weaknesses as a football player.
Gyokeres has not had the best first season at Arsenal. So far, he has made mistakes, he has gone quite a few games without scoring a goal, he has found it hard to be involved in many games, and there have been some really simple mistakes that he has made.
There is no denying that there are things that Gyokeres can improve on over time, and some could say that he has already improved on a few things in the last few weeks.
With that said, he still has 15 goals to his name, more than most strikers who have joined a top Premier League club this season.
Yes, there have been a few mistakes that he has made and there are a few weaknesses to his game, which Michael Owen dives into.
Michael Owen's assessment of Viktor Gyokeres sparks Arsenal debate
He said: “I like Gyökeres in so many aspects but I think he’s got so many weaknesses as well. To be Arsenal’s centre forward for the long term, am I getting carried away about just one game? No I’m not, I still think the questions are out there.”
There is not a whole lot wrong with what Owen said, but there are a few pointers that are not completely justified.
Gyokeres has made mistakes, and he has a few weaknesses, but he has also had a few performances in big games when Arsenal have needed a goal either to go up or to make things more comfortable for themselves. Many times, Gyokeres has come through with a goal.
Even in Arsenal's game against Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend, Gyokeres scored the go-ahead goal and the fourth, and essentially put the game to bed.
Yes, the new strikers that have joined Premier League clubs this season are also a bit younger in comparison to Gyokeres, but they have also not been as lethal as he has. Owen says he has so many weaknesses, but there is room for debate there.
He struggles to get involved in the game sometimes, and his dribbling is not the best, but he is doing what a striker has to do at all times - scoring goals - and he is doing it well.
The positives far outweigh the negatives, and soon that will be seen in his performances as well.
