Arsenal have the best defence in the world. The partnership of Gabriel and William Saliba is an example for other clubs in Europe to follow, but it's the Gunners who can proudly boast them. It could have been wildly different, though.
Before Man United signed Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, there was Arsenal. The Gunners were actively interested in signing Martinez, even going as far as submitting a bid for the Argentine.
That was back in 2022, and now that we have hindsight in our favour, it is clear to say that Arsenal dodged a bullet. Martinez is the polar opposite of what Arteta wants in a player.
Arsenal should feel thankful they avoided Lisandro Martinez
When the going gets tough, Lisandro Martinez throws his toys out of the pram like a child. Mikel Arteta doesn't need that; he needs players to step up like adults.
Martinez is the real focal point of Man United, for all the wrong reasons. Last month, he criticised the decision-makers at Man United for not investing in the squad... which is ironic, considering Man United have the second highest net-spend of any Premier League team, second only to Tottenham over the last five years.
Martinez's criticism of the higher-ups was a complete deflection of blame, but it had some truth to it. If Man United were to strengthen, though, it would be to Martinez's detriment. He is one of the clearest weak points at Man United.
The finger-pointing was bad enough, but what Martinez did at the weekend was far worse. He lost his head, and took his frustration out on the pitch. He was sent off against Chelsea, essentially handing Chelsea three points in the process. Only Martinez knows the reason for his actions, but if it was in protest, he harmed the fans instead of the board.
I have never been more thankful that Arsenal didn't sign a player as I've been with Lisandro Martinez. He is petulant, and his actions directly impact the fanbase.
If he were an Arsenal player, he would send the project backwards by a few years. Fans would understandably be calling for him to be sold, because great players don't point blame; they take accountability.
Many of us Arsenal fans remember the era of Man United's dominance in English football, and it is a far cry from the position they're in now. I can comfortably say that Man United are not a team to be feared anymore, and it's because of Lisandro Martinez, not despite him.
Whatever happened to make Martinez sign for Man United instead of Arsenal, thank you.
